Last week, Lesson 11 of the Mind Matters: Overcoming Adversity and Building Resilience curriculum centered on the students developing a personal Code of Honor and learning how to ask for help.

They identified their core values to support intentional decision-making and reduce impulsive reactions. The lesson also emphasized on building and utilizing a support system, emphasizing the need for students to seek help and communicate their needs.

These skills collectively aim to enhance resilience, strengthen relationships, and improve the students’ overall mental and emotional well-being.

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are traumatic events during childhood that have a profound impact on development, health, and well-being. They include abuse—physical, emotional, or sexual—along with neglect and household issues such as witnessing domestic violence, family substance use or mental health problems, and parental separation or loss.

Research shows that ACEs significantly increase the risk of health problems later in life, including heart disease, depression, and substance abuse.

During our session, students recognized the importance of speaking out about ACEs, a courageous and essential step toward healing and raising awareness for public health prevention.

They also learned that music and dance are powerful tools to support those with ACEs. These activities help calm the nervous system, process stored trauma, and enhance emotional and physical health.

A prime example of empowering expression was singing along to “Roar” by Katy Perry. As seen in the video, students gave their strongest roar against ACEs. This inspiring song promotes inner strength and overcoming challenging childhood experiences. They also engaged in singing and dancing to other motivational songs to foster resilience.

Today’s lesson turned into another inspiring learning experience.

It’s inspiring to see students eager to share their journals, which they say help process emotions.

Nurture provided two journals: one for personal use and another for practice during our sessions. By jotting down their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in these journals and practicing in their Mind Matters participant journals, they develop better emotional regulation and mental well-being.

Seeing their progress is truly motivating.

Today’s lesson introduced the students to Tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a self-soothing skill that reduces stress hormones like cortisol, calms the nervous system, and helps process negative emotions. Tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue sends calming signals to the brain, changing stress processing.

This benefits the students by helping them self-soothe during stress and difficult emotions, reducing anxiety and stress, improving emotional regulation, increasing resilience, enhancing confidence, and improving sleep. It offers a simple tool for managing anger, worry, fear, and other upsetting feelings.

As seen in the video, the students truly enjoyed learning and demonstrating this technique, many applying it to current challenges. It was truly inspiring to see them celebrated after their successful efforts. Overall, it was a joyful and educational experience.

Nurture of Alabama continues to bring fun and meaningful learning through the Heads Up Program, integrating the Mind Matters Curriculum at W.J. Christian School. The 5th and 6th grade students in Groups 1–4 are gaining skills to make positive choices, build confidence, and create brighter futures.

Their growth is inspiring. See the video for their positive comments and what they’ve learned so far.

Today we had another wonderful lesson from the Mind Matter curriculum at WJ Christian School. This session introduced additional coping skills that enhance their compassion and deepen emotional bonds. Their progress in the Heads Up program is truly inspiring. It was touching to see them learn and exchange positive words with classmates, lifting everyone’s spirits. Watching their smiling faces as they applied what they learned today brought us great joy.
