Thanks to generous funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, we partnered with Dr. Malak at the University of Alabama in Huntsville to complete an health econometric analysis of doula services. This study looks at how doula support affects health outcomes for families and how it can help reduce healthcare costs.

She reviewed 10 years of BirthWell Partners data for doula clients and compared it to Medicaid births in Jefferson County during the same time period.

Her findings show what we already know: doula support improves outcomes for moms and babies and also saves the health system money.

Clients who had doula support had:
🔹Lower rates of preterm birth
🔹Lower rates of low birthweight
🔹Lower C-section rates
🔹Higher rates of breastfeeding initiation

Better outcomes (like fewer preterm births) means fewer babies need expensive care like NICU stays or longer hospital visits. The money saved from better outcomes, more than pays for what the cost of doula services would be.

Our doulas had a great time tabling at the Community Maternal Resource Drive this past weekend as part of the Project Cradle Care initiative, hosted by the Lambda Eta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

This event focused on raising awareness and connecting families to resources that support healthier pregnancies and better outcomes for Black moms and babies.

We’re grateful to be part of a community working together to address inequities and ensure families have the support they deserve💛

What does it look like when Black moms feel heard and supported during pregnancy and birth?

Hear from BirthWell Partners clients as they share what it feels like to have a community-based doula by their side, helping them trust their bodies, speak up, and find their voice in systems that too often overlook them.

This Black Maternal Health Week, we’re uplifting the voices of our clients and the role doulas play in helping families feel supported, informed, and cared for – because this is how all care should be.

Today marks the start of Black Maternal Health Week.

Black moms and babies continue to face higher rates of maternal mortality, preterm birth, and infant loss. These outcomes are shaped by gaps in care, unequal treatment, and barriers to support.

At BirthWell Partners, we believe every family deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

This week, we are raising awareness, honoring Black mothers and families, and lifting up solutions like doula support that help improve outcomes and strengthen communities.

Because every mom deserves to feel heard. Every baby deserves a healthy start. Every family deserves to thrive.
