🦌❄️ Reindeer have one of the coolest eye adaptations in the animal world.

Their eyes actually change color with the seasons!

👉 Summer: golden-yellow
👉 Winter: deep blue

Why does this happen?

In the Arctic, daylight is bright in summer and almost completely dark in winter. To adapt, reindeer rely on a special reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum, the same structure that gives many animals “glowing eyes” at night.

In winter, increased pressure inside the eye flattens the tiny collagen fibers in this layer, shifting the reflection to blue.

Blue light scatters more inside the eye, giving reindeer better night vision during months of darkness.

How cool is that??

🎁 Did you know...

Not all holiday toys are created equal, and some can accidentally cause eye injuries, especially those with sharp edges, projectiles, or lasers?

The good news is there are plenty of fun, screen-free, ophthalmologist-approved ideas that keep kids entertained and protect their eyes!

Choosing eye-safe gifts helps protect kids from preventable injuries, and encourages healthy habits that support lifelong vision.

Alabama Ophthalmology Associates is pleased to be the first practice in the U.S. to sign on to begin offering Epioxa, the first and only FDA-approved epithelium-on, oxygen-enriched treatment for patients with keratoconus.

Dr. Kristin Bains and Dr. Walter Parker had the first O2N systems delivered and installed this week and are pleased to offer patients access to this novel therapy at both the Southside and Grandview locations in 2026.

Congratulations to Dr. Bains and Dr. Parker!

“Dr. Bains is thorough, compassionate, and truly listens, never rushed, always attentive.

Her attention to detail gives me confidence that my eyes are well cared for. If more than 5 stars were available, I’d rate higher!”

We’re so grateful for patients who share their experiences, and for doctors like Dr. Bains, who provide thoughtful, personalized care every day.

College students juggle busy schedules, late-night study sessions, and hours of screen time, and their eyes feel it.

Here are 2 very simple habits that help make a HUGE difference as you tackle homework and finals!

👁 Take screen breaks
Staring at digital devices makes you blink less, which can lead to dryness and blurry vision. Try the AAO’s 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

👓 Keep contacts clean
Good hygiene prevents serious eye infections. Never sleep in contacts unless your doctor says it’s safe, and replace your case regularly.

String lights, pine needles, glitter, and ornaments… great for decorating, not always so great for your eyes. 👀

As you get your home holiday-ready, here are a few simple ways to keep your eyes safe:
✨ Keep sharp branches and ornaments away from your face
✨ Be cautious with loose glitter or flocking (it can easily irritate your eyes)
✨ Use shatter-resistant ornaments if you have little ones around
✨ Take your time with ladders and step stools; poor lighting can make hazards harder to see

A little awareness goes a long way toward a safe (and festive!) holiday season. 🎄
