Major news in the hormone and menopause world…

The FDA is removing the black box warning from hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) for menopause.

The decision follows a comprehensive scientific review and represents the first major reassessment of HRT safety in more than 2 decades!

The removal is based on an updated FDA review of HRT that shows it reduces cardiovascular disease by 30%-50%, Alzheimer’s by 35% and bone fractures by 50%-60%.

This is a following the FDA’s early 2000s decision to apply a black box label warning on HRT for menopause symptom management, citing the results of the Women’s Health Initiative study, which said HRT increased the risk of breast cancer diagnoses.

Menopause at 40?! It’s known as early menopause and it’s not as uncommon as you might think.

The key difference is that with menopause at 40, your periods would stop completely for 12 consecutive months. That’s the defining marker of menopause itself.

Then you’d likely have the classic menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, trouble sleeping, and brain fog.

These happen because your ovaries have stopped producing eggs and your estrogen levels have dropped significantly.

If menopause is happening at 40, it’s definitely something to talk to a doctor about because it’s earlier than typical (average age is 51). Early menopause can have implications for bone health, heart health, and other things since you’re going without estrogen for more years than expected.

If you’re noticing changes with your cycle or any of the symptoms I mentioned above, I recommend running tests to confirm it’s actually menopause and not something else causing your periods to stop.

Osteoporosis is a common concern for people who are in the midst of perimenopause or menopause.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a common treatment for symptoms and complications associated with osteoporosis. Here’s how…

HRT increases the level of estrogen in the body and can help prevent osteoporosis. Once osteoporosis develops, HRT can help prevent further bone loss and breakage.

Your body’s estrogen levels drop during perimenopause, and one of estrogen’s functions in the body is keeping bones healthy. When your estrogen levels drop, it often leads to bone loss, fracture, and osteoporosis.

Estrogen-based HRT medications can replace estrogen levels and help prevent bone loss or the development of osteoporosis. They’re also a treatment option for people who already have osteoporosis because they can also help slow down bone loss and reduce the risk of fracture.

How is HRT prescribed?
A pill
A skin patch
Injection
Gel
Spray
Liquid

The right form of HRT for your osteoporosis will depend on various factors. To get a better idea if you may be in need of HRT, I invite you to take my free quiz. Comment “QUIZ” below and I will send it to you.

Perimenopause brings significant changes to the skin, primarily driven by declining estrogen levels.

Here’s what many women experience during this transition:

Dryness and moisture loss: This becomes increasingly noticeable as estrogen levels drop. Estrogen helps maintain skin hydration by supporting the production of natural oils and hyaluronic acid, so when these hormones decline, skin often feels tighter, rougher, and more prone to flaking.

Loss of elasticity and firmness: This occurs because estrogen stimulates collagen and elastin production.

During perimenopause, collagen production can decline by up to 30% in the first few years after menopause begins. This leads to sagging, particularly around the jawline, neck, and under the eyes, along with more pronounced wrinkles and fine lines.

Thinning skin: Skin becomes more fragile and translucent as the dermal layer loses volume. This makes blood vessels more visible and increases susceptibility to bruising and injury.

Changes in texture and tone are also common, with many women noticing increased dullness, uneven pigmentation, and age spots (hyperpigmentation). The skin’s natural cell turnover slows down, leading to a less radiant complexion.
