💙 Wear Teal Day | Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Today, our team at Upward Behavioral Health is wearing teal in support of survivors.

Teal Day is a reminder that sexual violence is more common than many realize—and that support, awareness, and access to effective care matter.

At Upward, this work is deeply aligned with what we do every day.
We are committed to providing trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment that supports recovery and helps individuals move forward after trauma.

Wearing teal is one small way to show support.

Continuing to build awareness, reduce stigma, and expand access to care is the work that follows.

🚨 NEW BLOG ALERT 🚨

Neurodiversity and PTSD in Adults: When Trauma Looks Different & Why Specialty Care Matters By Dr. Megan Keyes

April is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month—a time to move beyond awareness and deepen our understanding of how neurodivergent adults experience the world, including how they experience trauma.

In this new blog, Dr. Keyes highlights a critical and often overlooked reality: neurodivergent adults experience trauma at higher rates, yet PTSD is often missed, misunderstood, or misdiagnosed.

When clinicians don’t fully account for neurodiversity, trauma-related symptoms can be attributed solely to autism or ADHD—or overlooked entirely. Over time, this can leave individuals without access to the care that could actually help.

This matters, because:
PTSD is treatable.
And neurodivergent adults are not “too complex” for effective care.

With the right clinical expertise, evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE) can be delivered in ways that are both neurodiversity-affirming and highly effective.

The goal isn’t to change who you are.
It’s to ensure you have access to care that truly fits.

✨UpWORDS Wednesday ✨

Thanks to for this week's inspo!

It’s okay to not have it all figured out. 🤍

Therapy isn’t about having the “right” answers—it’s about giving yourself space to explore the questions.

It’s okay to take a mental health day.
It’s okay to feel discouraged.
It’s okay to ask for help (even when it feels hard).
It’s okay to try again tomorrow.

Growth isn’t linear. Healing isn’t rushed. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Wherever you are in your journey, that’s a valid place to begin. 🌿

Our field lost a true pioneer with the passing of Edna Foa.

Dr. Foa’s work fundamentally changed how we understand and treat both PTSD and OCD. As the developer of Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy and a leading contributor to Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), she helped establish the gold-standard, evidence-based treatments for these conditions—approaches that continue to guide care today.

At Upward Behavioral Health, these are the treatments our clinicians provide every day. And because of Dr. Foa’s work, many of our clients have been able to confront what feels overwhelming, move through it, and reclaim their lives.

Dr. Megan Keyes had the privilege of training with Dr. Foa and reflects on her impact:

“While I learned innumerable lessons from her over the years, the greatest was that people can do hard things. This was her approach to individuals progressing through trauma-focused therapy as well as the therapists providing the treatment. Her deep belief in a person’s innate ability to navigate trauma exposure work and reclaim their life was palpable.

Dr. Foa’s work—and my work with her—shaped me both professionally and personally: navigating challenges, speaking to difficult things, finding meaning in the unexpected—and always approaching rather than avoiding, working through rather than around, and believing that forward movement is possible.”

Her legacy lives on—in the science she advanced, the clinicians she trained, and the lives changed through evidence-based care.

Effective trauma therapy isn’t just about the model—it’s about the skills that bring it to life. ✨

We’re proud to share that Dr. Megan Keyes is teaching a 2-day Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD workshop this summer at in St. Louis.

CPT is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for PTSD in adults—and one of the specialized services we offer at Upward Behavioral Health.

Dr. Keyes brings 20+ years of experience working with adults with PTSD, with a career focused on delivering first-line, evidence-based trauma treatments as a clinician, as well as providing consultation, training, and teaching in these approaches.

This training focuses on the core clinical skills that help clients process trauma and move toward recovery—and reflects our mission at Upward: providing evidence-based care delivered by clinical experts.

New Blog Alert!

Dr. Susan Rathmell recently wrote a new blog: "Ten Easy-to-Use "Life Hacks" for Adults with ADHD."

Your brain isn’t broken. It just needs a different approach. 🧠💡

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or like “simple” tasks take way more effort than they should… you’re not alone. ADHD can make starting, organizing, and following through feel like a constant uphill climb.

But here’s the good news: small, realistic strategies can make a big difference.
Think:
✔️ starting with just 5 minutes
✔️ creating visual cues that actually work
✔️ building systems that support your brain—not fight it

Because ADHD isn’t about knowing what to do—it’s about making it doable in the moment.

You don’t need perfection. You need tools that meet you where you are.

Ready to make daily life feel a little easier? Check out our latest blog for 10 simple, ADHD-friendly life hacks you can start today. 💙
