Runners and strength training myths

Most runners I work with neglect strength training altogether or rely solely on resistance bands.

While they can be great complementary work, MOST resistance band training I see does not provide enough of a challenge to greatly improve strength. Grab some iron and drop the bands for greater performance.

Make sure to give your ankles (calf muscles included) some love if you seem to always have "tight hips." I was surprised to read no noted change in pronation was noted with restricted ankle motion.

Proper ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ADF-ROM) allows the anterior roll of the tibia relative to the foot during the midstance phase of gait, whi…

A handy to for self muscle work are hand rollers. Sometimes a foam roller just can get the job done. Hand rollers are great for travel and tossing in a golf bag for a little warmup before the round. The model I have is made by Trigger Point. There are several other brands that work really well and are just as portable.

I love seeing more people out running the last few weeks. More runners also means more prevalent calls about shin splints. This is a bit more detail on a posterior shin splint taping I sent an athlete last week. Most often we thing if the front of the shin experiencing the pain. I encounter nearly as many “inside” calf and foot pain that typically is caused by inflammation of the tibialis posterior. Remember DO NOT pull the tape too tight. Less is more. Reach out if you’re having any problems.

One clip following a FaceTime consultation with one of my athletes. Even when we can’t be in the same room, I can provide you with video content to keep you running, cycling, and moving without pain.
