Whole blood is saving lives. But here’s the reality: 99% of EMS agencies across the U.S. don’t carry it yet. And even among those that do, blood is a limited, precious resource.
That’s why the first step is always the same: keep as much blood inside the body as possible. Rapid hemorrhage control — especially in junctional, pelvic, and abdominal bleeds — buys time, preserves circulating volume, and makes every drop of blood you do have more effective.
Think of it this way:
🩸 No blood out: Stop the bleed at its source. Temporize. Stabilize.
💉 Whole blood in: Restore what’s been lost and sustain perfusion.
Whether your agency has a whole blood program or not, the principle doesn’t change — turn off the faucet before you refill the tank.
