Access for ALL Wednesday: Disability Accessability

Waiting rooms at healthcare providers are required to be accessible for people with disabilities!

The 2010 ADA Standards require waiting rooms to have an accessible route, clear floor space, and features like accessible seating and signage to ensure usability for people with disabilities.

The picture shows a hospital that did it right! They have spaces designated, signed, and large enough for wheelchair users to wait without having to block the path of travel. These spaces must be 36” wide for 1 space or 33” wide for each space if two spaces are side by side.

Social Security Sunday

Do you know someone with a newborn who has a low birth weight?

They may qualify for payments from Social Security and Medicaid, and qualifying for this program is not restricted by the parent(s) income!

(Note: Birth weight below 2 pounds, 10 ounces — SSA evaluates low birth weight - in infants from birth to age 1 and failure to thrive in infants and toddlers from birth to attainment of age 3. Learn more: https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/100.00-GrowthImpairment-Childhood.htm)

If you know someone with a baby who meets this criteria, let them know that our advocates are skilled and here to empower them on their Social Security journey! info@DisabilityAdvocacySolutions.com

Let's talk about accessibility.

Did you know there is specific guidance for doorway widths in public places?

404.2.3 Door openings shall provide a clear width of 32 inches (815 mm) minimum.

Unfortunately, the hospital where this picture was taken did not implement the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design when they remodeled this clinic space and failed to correct the 27” doorway to the only bathroom available to patients.

Note:
The clinic shown in the image serves children who use mobility devices.
Also important to note in this image is the placement of the chair in front of the bathroom door, another violation of ADA standards.

True or False: When a child is the applicant for a Medicaid waiver, the parents’ income and assets are deemed to the child.

FALSE! For waiver applications, it is the child’s “income” that counts. No family members’ income is deemed to the child. However, this is necessarily the case for standard Medicaid.

Our advocates are skilled and here to empower you on your Alabama Medicaid Waiver journey!
