The last conversation with my son before his final intubation and his passing almost 2 years ago. Today would have been his birthday. Happy heavenly birthday Davey...
“Momma, If I get out of here one more time, will you cook me anything I want?”
Of course, I said yes — knowing exactly what that meant: country fried steak and gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, green beans, and buttermilk cornbread. That boy loved to eat, and he always loved my cooking.
Then came the most beautiful words I have ever heard him say:
“Mama, I’m in God’s hands now. Mawmaw Simmons and Granny Startley are waiting for me there, and I’ll be happy there. I’m at peace.”
He told me he loved me.
He told me he loved his wife, Coni, and his son, Jaxy. He said he love his daughter Shay Startley and misses her.
Later that day, he had to be intubated again.
Those were his final words to me — our final conversation.
