Happy Wellness Wednesday π
How we think about ourselves is important for our mental and overall wellness.
We often feel like we have to be perfect. Especially when there is pressure to perform academically.
Remember, people aren't perfect and doing our best is enough.

Burnout can often happen without us noticing before it gets intense.
Take a second and think about how you've been doing with these signs of burnout in mind.
Burnout isn't a sign of failure; it's just time to take a break and take care of yourself.

I hope everyone is having a good Wellness Wednesday!
Counseling can be a huge help with mental wellness. Some people may believe that counseling is only for crisis, but counseling can help with a wide range of things outside of being in crisis.

Tuesday tip day!
If you have a hard time maintaining focus when studying or feel drained try the 25-minute focus, 5-minute break strategy.
This allows your brain to reset and helps with longer study sessions.

It's common to struggle with test anxiety but there are some simple mindfulness practices that can help.
Acknowledging anxious thoughts and letting them pass while focusing on your breathing can help calm and focus you.
Grounding and breathing exercises can also help when overwhelmed or anxious.

When we get overwhelmed, we may feel like we can't control anything or we may struggle trying to control everything. πͺοΈ
It is important to define what we can control and what we can't. This way we can let go of that stress from trying to control what we can't and we can make progress moving forward with what we can control. β¨

This Mindful Monday I want us to think about how we act in our relationships with other people; friends, family, partners, etc. and take a minute to see if we ever feel like we're walking on eggshells.
When we "walk on eggshells" because we feel like we need to make the other person happy or avoid any negative reactions we are actually teaching ourselves negative and untrue ideas.
Doing so causes stress, anxiety, loss of self-esteem, and difficulty communicating.
Instead practice self-compassion, set and enforce boundaries, and use "I" statements to communicate feelings clearly.

Mental health counseling is a unique relationship in which a therapist walks beside you, listens to your story without judgement, and offers tailored support.
Sometimes counseling may be short. It may help you to learn concrete skills to improve relationships, reduce stress, increase productivity or to improve other symptoms that have a negative impact on your life. Counseling can also give support during a challenging transition or life event. Sometimes counseling is longer term, and we may work together to improve a specific disorder, trauma, or targeted area in your life.
Whatever reason you have to seek counseling, we are here for you, UAB students!
UAB Student Counseling Services offers students of all backgrounds, races, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, ethnicities, and cultures a safe place to discuss and resolve issues that interfere with personal and academic goals.
Our direct support to students includes individual, couple, and group counseling options, as well as prevention and outreach services, crisis and emergency support, and consultation services. Last year, over 6,000 UAB students utilized counseling on campus.
