Children’s of Alabama is excited to welcome Clara Blitch, MBA, MSML, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CHHR, as its new Chief Human Resources Officer! Clara brings more than 25 years of human resources leadership experience across healthcare, hospitality and biotechnology.

“My life's calling is about helping people,” Clara said. “I consider myself a human-centered servant-leader. When leadership makes decisions, I think about how they affect staff at every level. I love being around people and enjoy working with all types of personalities, diversity of thoughts, and backgrounds. I am excited to get to know everyone across the organization and be part of enriching the lives of children and their families. If I can play even a small part in supporting the people at Children's who are saving lives, that is how I fulfill my life’s work.”

Congratulations to Lara Dillon, NICU, who was awarded the DAISY Award! 🌼

"Lara has been one of our consistent night nurses. She makes us feel like part of the team and her obvious, intentional care makes her feel like family to us. Recently, Lara let me help with night care, which included bath time. I got to share that first big mom moment with a nurse who takes care of him in detail, which made it all feel as easy as it can be in a hospital setting. I can depend on Lara to keep us updated on big changes, even late into the night. Nurses like her make a difficult situation a bit easier on the heart."

Congratulations, Lara!

We’re proud to share an exciting milestone for our patients and families!💙

At Children’s of Alabama, we’ve officially opened our newly designed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) — expanding our ability to care for the most critically ill children across the Southeast.

This new space combines our PICU and Special Care Units into one flexible, state-of-the-art critical care environment. Designed to support children with complex medical needs, the unit features leading-edge technology, enhanced care coordination, and a healing environment for families during some of their most challenging moments.

This project reflects the dedication of our multidisciplinary teams and the incredible support of our community — including a $3 million gift from Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club. We’re also grateful to Hoar Construction, LLC and Poole & Company Architects for helping bring this vision to life.

Thank you to our incredible team of dedicated staff members who made this move possible!

When Children's of Alabama was founded in 1911, an all-female group of volunteers did whatever was needed to operate the charity hospital, from scrubbing floors to sitting with sick children.

One hundred fifteen years later, 87% of our dedicated staff and 65% of our leadership team are women. Today, we have been recognized as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women 2026 by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group!
