When Children's of Alabama was founded in 1911, an all-female group of volunteers did whatever was needed to operate the charity hospital, from scrubbing floors to sitting with sick children.

One hundred fifteen years later, 87% of our dedicated staff and 65% of our leadership team are women. Today, we have been recognized as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women 2026 by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group!

Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and how it functions. In the United States, nearly 40,000 babies are born each year with a heart defect. ❤️‍🩹

The Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center of Alabama at Children’s of Alabama is a comprehensive cardiac center with more than 300 staff members specially trained to care for patients with congenital heart defects and other acquired cardiac conditions. The team physicians, including cardiologists, intensivists, surgeons and anesthesiologists, as well as nurses, respiratory therapists, perfusionists and numerous multi-disciplinary allied health professionals are dedicated to patient and family--centered care.

Some highlights of the center are:
-A 16-bed CCU (Cardiac Care Unit)
-A 20-room CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit), including four ECMO suites
-Two dedicated cardiac operating rooms
-Three heart catheterization laboratories

Congratulations to our recent IMPACT Award winner, Grace Willingham, Family Services! Her nomination read:

"Grace had been working with a patient who was at end-of-life. The family took the time to share with other staff members the impact Grace has had not only on the patient's life, but on the entire family's. Grace completed all memory-making activities the family had requested and provided a variety of appropriate grief resources. Grace also ensured the patient's sibling had a developmentally appropriate understanding of what was happening, a safe space to express feelings, and the opportunity to say goodbye.

Although grief/bereavement support is just one of the many crucial and highly specialized roles Certified Child Life Specialists implement in the hospital, Grace truly did everything in her power to ensure this family felt heard and supported during an incredibly difficult time. The items created by the help of Grace have now become treasured keepsakes that serve as a vital part of this family's bereavement journey."

Congrats, Grace!🫶

Representatives from Children's of Alabama and UAB attended Child Advocacy Day 2026 hosted by VOICES for Alabama’s Children. This meaningful morning focused on elevating the voices of children and families and engaging directly with policymakers on the issues that matter most to Alabama’s future.

This annual gathering brought together advocates, partners, and legislators to explore key data, hear updates from state agencies and community leaders, and discuss the policy landscape shaping outcomes for Alabama’s children.

We're kicking off by introducing you to our friend, Ivey! ❤️

Diagnosed with Atrioventricular (AV) canal defect and pulmonary atresia, Ivey underwent her first open-heart surgery at 19 days old. After an eight-month wait—months spent in-patient at the hospital—the call finally came, and Ivey was taken to surgery for a heart transplant. The procedure, performed by Dr. Robert Sorabella, was among the most complex he has ever completed.

Today, Ivey is continuing to grow stronger—gaining mobility, reaching milestones, and beginning to find her voice. Read Ivey's story! https://www.childrensal.org/patient-stories/ivey-raper
