You know those moments when life hands you a puzzle with half the pieces missing?
You’ve prayed, planned, done everything you know to do, and somehow you’re still stuck. You don’t know what to say, what decision to make, or even which direction to turn.
That’s where King Jehoshaphat found himself in 2 Chronicles 20.
A massive army was marching toward Judah. The people were terrified. There was no strategy, no strength, no possible escape.
Surrounded and overwhelmed, the king stood before God and prayed, ending with this one simple, desperate but perfect line: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (20:12).
Our eyes are upon you. In Hebrew, עָלֶיךָ עֵינֵינוּ (ah-LAY-khah ay-NAY-noo).
That’s it. No detailed request. Just an honest and humble confession (“We do not know what to do”) followed by a simple statement of trust (“but our eyes are upon you”).
It may be one of the most genuine prayers in all of Scripture. And a prayer that we could pray times without number in our lives.
When we don’t know what to do. When we are stuck. We say to our Father, “I have no idea what’s going on or where I go from here, but one thing I know: my eyes are locked on you.”
So let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, our strength in weakness, and the unseen hand that guides us down the labyrinthine pathways of life.
Jesus, we do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.
