Your nervous system has 3 modes, understanding them will help you so much. Let's dive in...

STATE 1: SAFE & SOCIAL (Ventral Vagal)
You feel calm, connected, grounded, present, able to engage with others. Your body can rest, digest, heal, have high heart rate variability. This is where THRIVING happens.

STATE 2: FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT (Sympathetic)
Stress response activated. You feel anxious, on edge, irritable, hypervigilant, need to DO something. Heart racing, shallow breathing, digestion shuts down, muscles tense. This is SURVIVAL mode.

STATE 3: FREEZE/SHUTDOWN (Dorsal Vagal)
Not the good kind of parasympathetic - this is dissociation. You feel numb, disconnected, hopeless, depressed, "checking out," can't feel anything. You are immobilized, collapsed, shut down. This is when fight-or-flight didn't work, so your nervous system GAVE UP.

Most people think the goal is: Get out of fight-or-flight → Into rest-and-digest.

But that's not enough.
There are TWO types of parasympathetic:

Ventral vagal = SAFE parasympathetic (calm, connected, social)
Dorsal vagal = SHUTDOWN parasympathetic (numb, frozen, dissociated)

You don't just want to be "not stressed." You want to be in SAFE & SOCIAL.
Most people are stuck in fight-or-flight or freeze. They've been there so long, they don't remember what "safe & social" feels like.

What keeps you stuck?
-Chronic stress

Dear Future Self... Thank you for being healthy and regulated. Thank you for choosing prevention 💙

This is the letter I want to write to myself 10, 20, 30 years from now.
Thank you for being healthy when so many people around you are managing chronic pain, popping pills daily, and feeling like their body is betraying them.
Thank you for being regulated when others are burnt out, anxious, running on fumes, stuck in survival mode with no capacity left.
Thank you for investing in your nervous system before crisis forced you to.

I know it felt weird at first. Going to the chiropractor when nothing hurt or getting adjusted regularly when you “felt fine.”

People asked “why are you going if nothing’s wrong?”
You knew something most people don’t realize until it’s too late:
By the time pain shows up, dysfunction has been building for months or years. By the time symptoms appear, your nervous system has been compensating, adapting, struggling. By the time crisis hits, recovery is long and difficult.

You chose to support your spine and nervous system BEFORE imbalance became pain. Before compensation became chronic and before dysfunction became crisis.

3 signs you can benefit from chiropractic (and they have nothing to do with back pain). 💙

SIGN #1: Short fuse. Small things set you off. You snap, you're irritable, you can't calm down. Everyone says "just relax" but you CAN'T.
Your nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight. Your vagus nerve (the main "calm down" nerve) exits at your upper cervical spine - when your upper neck is out of balance, vagus nerve function is compromised and your ability to shift from stress to calm is impaired.

SIGN #2: Shoulders by your ears. Chronic neck, shoulder, upper back tension. Massages help for two days then tension returns.
When you're chronically stressed, your body takes a protective posture - shoulders elevate, neck tightens, you're bracing for impact even at your desk. Forward head posture creates upper cervical imbalance, which affects vagus nerve, which makes it harder to calm down, which creates more tension.

SIGN #3: Can't handle stress like you used to. Things that didn't bother you now feel overwhelming. Exhausted but can't sleep. Anxious but can't calm down. Small stressors feel like major crises. Your nervous system has been running on fumes so long it's lost resilience. Stuck in sympathetic overdrive with no ability to downregulate.

"Mom, why is my brain like this?" This is how I explained ADHD to my child - and it changed everything. 🏎️

Kids with ADHD have a Ferrari engine (fast, powerful, intense brain) but bicycle brakes (under-developed executive function in the prefrontal cortex).

They think fast, feel everything intensely, have amazing ideas - but the part of their brain that helps them stop, focus, organize, and regulate? It's still developing.

So when they can't sit still, forget things, interrupt, or get intensely upset - it's not that they're not trying. It's that they have a race car brain with bicycle brakes that are still being built.

When the spine is imbalanced, brain-body communication is disrupted. Signals between the powerful engine and the developing brakes get fuzzy.

Chiropractic helps:
-Upper cervical work supports the brainstem (which connects to prefrontal cortex function). -Nervous system regulation helps shift them out of constant "race mode" so they can access their brakes.
-Better brain-body communication makes the signals clearer.

If your period cramps are debilitating, that’s not normal. And you don’t have to live like that. 💚

Calling out of work, curled up in bed with a heating pad, living on ibuprofen, and dreading that week every month because you know you’re going to be miserable.

Everyone says “some women just have bad periods” or “try birth control to manage it.”
But did you know that your uterus is controlled by nerves from your lower spine (L1-L2) and sacrum?

These nerves regulate:
Uterine muscle contractions
Blood flow to the uterus
Inflammation levels
Pain signals
Hormone receptor sensitivity

When your lumbar spine or pelvis are out of balance (from sitting, old injuries, compensation patterns, previous pregnancies, chronic stress), nerve signals to your uterus are disrupted.

Your uterus can’t contract smoothly (more cramping). Inflammation increases (more pain). Blood flow is compromised (more intense cramps). Pain signals amplify (everything hurts more).

You’re not “just unlucky.” Your nervous system isn’t coordinating uterine function properly.

Birth control or pain meds mask the symptom. They don’t address why your uterus is cramping so intensely in the first place.

Chiropractic addresses the root cause:
Lower back and sacral adjustments restore nerve flow to your uterus. When nerve signals are clear, your uterus can contract smoothly (the way it’s designed to), inflammation decreases, pain reduces.

You're exhausted all day. But the second you get in bed? Wide awake, mind racing, and your body is restless. 😴⚡

You're stuck in "tired but wired." This means you are exhausted but can't sleep. Your mind won't shut off and lying there for hours. Maybe you are waking at 2-3am unable to fall back asleep? And even more tired in the morning than when you went to bed.

You're desperate for rest. But your nervous system won't let you.

Here's what's actually happening: Your nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight (sympathetic mode) even though you're exhausted. To sleep, you need to shift into rest-and-restore (parasympathetic). But chronic stress, cortisol dysregulation, and compensation patterns are blocking that shift.

When your upper neck or sacrum are misaligned, your nervous system PHYSICALLY CAN'T activate rest mode. Your vagus nerve (the main "calm down" nerve) exits at C1. Your parasympathetic pathways run through your sacrum. Imbalance = interference.

Why sleep aids don't work: Melatonin doesn't fix WHY your body isn't producing it. Sleep meds force unconsciousness but don't shift your nervous system (quality suffers). You can't force rest, you have to support the shift.

The Maximized family is growing again! ✨ We are always looking for ways to provide the best care for our community, which is why we’re so stoked to welcome our new Occupational Therapist to the team!

“I was born and raised in Bismarck, ND. I am a proud wife to my husband Cody and new mama to my sweet little son, Asher. He is almost a year old and is the absolute joy of our lives. In my spare time I love going on coffee dates with friends, going to the lake with my family in the summertime, and my favorite guilty pleasure is watching reality tv shows!

I always knew I wanted to work in the medical field and originally planned to become a chiropractor throughout high school and much of college. That plan shifted during my senior year of college when I discovered occupational therapy - and it all just clicked!! I was drawn to the creativity of the profession and the focus on helping people build real-life skills in ways that are meaningful, practical, and even fun. It felt like the perfect fit and a career where I could truly make a difference for both children and their families. Now my journey is coming full circle - working in a chiropractic office and focusing on a holistic approach to health and wellness for the families in our community.”
