We join our colleagues in honoring Melissa White Bear. The good she brought to our people and her community. She will be deeply missed, and we hold her family, loved ones, and program in our thoughts. In this time of grief, we remind one another to check in, speak up, and seek support when the weight feels too heavy. You are never alone.

With heavy hearts, we honor and remember Melissa Kuúnuxtaaka Whitebear.

Melissa was many things to our MHASL family, a guest who came seeking healing, a house manager who led with strength and accountability, and a case manager who walked alongside others with compassion and courage. She understood recovery not just as a concept, but as a lived experience.

Melissa carried herself with bravery, even while facing a silent struggle that many never saw. Her journey reminds us of the complexity of healing and the weight that can exist behind even the strongest smiles. She showed up for others, even when she herself was hurting, and that truth deserves to be honored with honesty and love.

As a program, as a community, and as relatives, this loss is deeply felt. MHASL Program will endure this painful moment together, leaning on one another, supporting one another, and recommitting ourselves to the work of recovery, connection, and hope. Grief is part of this path, but so is compassion.

We ask that you keep Melissa, her family, and all who loved her in your prayers. Hold one another close. Reach out. Talk. Do not struggle alone.

❤️The Holidays Aren’t Always Merry — And That’s Okay💚

For many, the holiday season is painted as a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. But for others, it can bring feelings of loneliness, grief, anxiety, depression, or increased struggles with mental health and substance use. If you’re finding this time of year especially heavy, please know—you are not alone, and there is nothing wrong with you for feeling this way.

At our facility, we see firsthand how the holidays can intensify emotions. Old memories resurface, expectations feel overwhelming, and the pressure to “be happy” can make things feel even harder. We want you to know that help is available, and support exists even when it feels distant.

✨If you’re struggling this season, here are a few gentle reminders and tips:

• Give yourself permission to feel. You don’t have to force joy. Whatever you’re feeling is valid.
• Stay connected. Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or support group—even a short conversation can help.
• Set boundaries. It’s okay to say no to events or traditions that feel overwhelming. Protect your peace.
• Create small moments of care. A walk, warm tea, journaling, or quiet time can ground you during tough moments.
• Ask for help early. You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out.

🤍Hope is still here. Help is still here. We are still here.
If you or someone you love is struggling with mental health or substance use during the holidays, please reach out. Support, compassion, and recovery are possible—during the holidays and beyond.

You matter. Your story matters. And you deserve support, not silence.

📞 If you need help, don’t hesitate to contact us or reach out to a local crisis line. You are never alone.

This holiday season, we want to give back to the community that has so graciously welcomed and supported us since we opened our doors in 2018. 🤎

From November 12th-26th, we’ll be hosting a Food Drive to collect non-perishable food items for those in need right here in Bismarck.

All donated items will be placed in the "Little Free Pantry" located throughout the city by some of our wonderful staff—helping ensure that everyone in the community has access to food and kindness during the holiday season.

Good Road Recovery Center Philosophy

The Good Road Recovery Center of the MHA Nation believes that alcoholism/chemical dependency is a progressive disease that affects the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects of ourselves and our families, as well as the overall dynamics of our Tribe.

It is also our belief that this disease can be arrested through education, intervention, treatment, and self-help. In our treatment philosophy, we believe that an individual does have control over his/her life. The individual, through his/her decision-making process can dictate his/her present and future. We also believe that with the help of a higher power or Great Spirit, and with the strength of our traditions and culture, we can improve our chances for sobriety and a healthy lifestyle.

The Good Road Recovery Center has the belief that through non-judgmental education, a return to our cultural teachings and prevention activities with our families and relatives, we can make known the future consequences of the use and abuse of mood-altering chemicals and create positive attitudes and behaviors regarding abstinence and recovery.
