Gratitude arrives every evening,
It visits at the end of each day,
Wrapping me in a warm appreciation,
For everything that's been sent my way.

It's accompanied by a gentle reminder,
That life isn't always easy or kind,
But for each problem there's a solution,
And a way forward, we miraculously find.

When all is done, I can finally exhale,
And seek a moment to recover and rest,
Knowing that whatever has happened,
I strived, proudly, to do my best.

As dusk falls upon the distant horizon,
And the moonlight illuminates the way,
I count each of my blessings, one by one
And give thanks for another day ..

THREE WOMEN — THREE DIRECTIONS OF MEMORY

They stand at the edge of a new sunrise,
wrapped not in cloth alone,
but in stories older than iron and ink.

One carries yesterday —
the names of those who walked before us
and were not allowed to finish their songs.

One carries the unbroken now —
the breath that still answers to the drum
even when the world tries to still the hands.

One carries tomorrow —
a promise held like a feather
that no child of this land
will be born without a witness.

Their faces are unpainted —
for they are every woman,
every sister, every mother,
every grandmother whose body became
the last place our language could hide
when the world hunted it.

They do not beg history to remember them —
they are the remembering.

And as long as one Native woman
stands upright in dawn light,
holding silence like a blade that does not rust,
our people are not done.
