Types of Wind Invasion and Traditional Herbs
- Wind Heat -
Wind Heat has a lot of your classic sickness symptoms:
Fever
Sore throat
Sudden onset of symptoms
Has signs of heat - redness, irritated, stimulated
Green, yellow, or orange mucus
🍃Suggested herbs for Wind Heat may include:
Boneset
Yarrow
Elderflower, not berry
Linden
Honeysuckle
Violet
Elecampane

- Wind Cold -
Wind Cold is less common and difficult to identify:
Slow progression of symptoms
Sluggishness
Drippy nose or sinus congestion
Sensitive to cold
Low appetite
White or clear mucus
🍃Suggested herbs for Wind Cold may include:
Hyssop, not Anise Hyssop
Ginger
Cottonwood Bud
Astragalus
Elderberry, not flower
Lomatium
Culinary spices such as Thyme, Oregano, Sage, Rosemary

- Wind Damp -
Doesn’t this sound contradicting? Wind Damp is essentially stagnation of fluids. The invading wind causes (usually) lymph to slow down or stop flowing:
Damp can be paired with hot or cold symptoms
Swelling of lymph nodes
Congestion of sinuses or lungs
Sinus pressure
Lack of appetite due to lymphatic stagnation
Excess mucus production
🍃Suggested herbs for Wind Damp may include:
Lymphatic or circulatory herbs
Violet
Elecampane
Astragalus
Heal All AKA Self Heal
Cleavers
Chickweed
Pleurisy Root

There are many combinations of Wind that can happen in one body and more types than what has been listed, these 3 types of wind are simply the most common invasions seen during cold and flu season. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog with more details on TCM Wind Invasion.

‘Tis the Season of Wind Invasion, Part 1

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the season of Winter is full of “Wind Invasion”. What is this, you ask? It is literally the wind from our environment invading our body, but it is also the invasion of foreign entities (viruses).

“Wind”, both viruses and the wind itself, likes to stir things up in the body, activating the immune system responses but also the nervous system. Have you ever watched a sickness travel through the office but not every person has the same symptoms? That’s because wind will affect us differently based on our constitutional strengths and weaknesses. Some people won’t ever get sick and that’s because they have a strong Defensive Qi or energy.

Luckily, a lot of wind symptoms, both viral and environmental, will receive the same herbs to alleviate the invading winds. The question is, what type of wind invasion do you have? 3 of the most common wind invasion types seen during cold and flu season are: Wind Heat, Wind Cold, Wind Damp

Later this week we will post the common symptoms of wind invasion and which herbs we recommend for effective support. Watch for Part 2 later this week!

Get Healthy • Lose Weight • Spend Less Save More • Get Organized • Be Kinder • Prioritize Sleep
Where did New Year’s resolutions originate, and why are they a popular part of our culture?

It is generally understood that the ancient Babylonians were the first culture to take part in resolutions and to celebrate the new year. Their new year began in what is our time of mid-March, when the farming season began. During this time the Babylonians celebrated a 12-day religious festival called Akitu. The people would make promises to their gods to pay their debts and return borrowed items.

The ancient Romans practiced a similar tradition. Janus (January) was a two-faced god who symbolically looked backwards at reflection/resolution and simultaneously looked forwards to new beginnings. The people made sacrifices to Janus and promised to behave better in the coming year.

There are also New Year stories of peacocks and medieval knights, of life-sized dolls set on fire at midnight, of night watch services and the singing of hymns. With so many diverse views, the one feeling that most of the known traditions share in common is the (very human) universal desire to begin again and do it better.

PSB wishes you all a happy, healthy, and very herby year ahead!!✨

During the Winter months, my skin takes a dry transformation. You may find me rubbing my itchy back along my office chair in resemblance to a bear rubbing his/her back along a tree. A few years ago while researching ways to help control my bear shape shifting, I found information on dry brushing the skin.

What is dry brushing? I immediately think of brushing a horse…watching the dust rise up, the horse quiver in pleasure, and the sound of the dry brush against the horse hair. This care practice is not just for horses. While most practices of exfoliating the skin are using water and/or products, dry brushing is using a brush with out water or products.

What are the benefits of dry brushing? It has been around for 1,000’s of years in many different forms and cultures.  Traditionally dry brushing has been used for several self care practices:

1. To exfoliate dead skin cells and open the pores.
2. Stimulate the Lymphatic system.
3. Promote relaxation.
4. As a form of Meditation.
5. It feels wonderful.

What kind of brush is recommended, and how do I start? Read our blog post “Dry Brushing: Not Just for Horses!” to learn more. You may be inspired to add something new to your winter self care routine!
