Here was the news from Rose Hill on June 12, 1889:

"As Tryphenia does not seem to be attending to his duty, I will scrape a few items from our thriving little village./
Why should we not have the courthouse here? It is nearer the center of the county; but since Blair has "got there" we'll have to scheme on a glue factory or something of that sort./
Children's Day was witnessed here Sunday. The Church was decorated with flowers and everything passed off pleasantly. The [Sunday School] is talking of turning the annual picnic into a fishing picnic./
Miss Hattie Tracy, of Blair, is visiting friends here./
The Cuming City baseball club came up and played the Rose Hill boys last Sunday and got "done up." The score stood 24 for Rose Hill and 20 for Cuming City./
The last hop at the hall was a success. The next dance will be on the 13th. Everyone is cordially invited./
Some of the Rose Hillites attended the Free Methodist meeting at Herman, Sunday evening. The report is that they are having an inglorious time./
The singing class boasts of nearly 40 members."

I wish our newspapers still sounded like this. 📰

P R E S E R V I N G H I S T O R Y. 🪦

Henry W. Robertson, a native of Breckinridge County, Kentucky, was born on February 2, 1849. Robertson, a popular old name in Kentucky, was also affiliated with the Meadors, Seatons, Lambs, and Burgesses - all families who found their way from Kentucky to Washington County, Nebraska.

We know that Henry's early life is a little murky, but in 1872, we learned that he married Emmaline Burgess, daughter of William and Mary Burgess (both buried in Rose Hill). Over the course of the next 5-7 years, Henry and Emmaline moved to Nebraska with her parents, and they brought along their two small daughters - Ada and Lillian.

On May 22, 1882, Henry died. From what, we have no idea. We are currently looking for an obituary. His two daughters are buried nearby - Ada McKillips in Kennard and Lillian in Elk City. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding Henry, but we are currently in the mood to figure out his story.

In the meantime, we figured out his stone. Originally, pieces of the stone had been buried in the ground. Dad and I took a spade and fence stake out to the cemetery and poked around. Ultimately, we retrieved the pieces; however, some of the stone has just, unfortunately, disintegrated. Armed with a brush, soap, and water, dad and I scrubbed away at the stone until a lot of the writing was legible.

Dad is of the belief that Henry's stone was intentionally destroyed, but it's hard for me to wrap my clearly naive mind around that idea. Who would do that? Despite the theory, this gravestone was knocked around.

We'll keep you posted on what we learn! Every single day, we learn something new, but for now...we plan on grabbing some concrete and setting Henry's stone back to normal. Wish us luck!

This website has been 2 years in the making, but...teaching is a stressful job, and I found myself busy - very, very busy. I'm still working on placing all my research on the website, BUT I did establish a place to donate, as well as minor information about the cemetery. Sue Taylor's AMAZING work with our annual newsletter is on full display, and I also included updated lot prices.

If you have any questions, let me know. Thank you for your patience, and I ask for a little more of it as I work on scanning all my research. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT, ROSE HILL DESCENDANTS. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING ONLINE!! Our little cemetery deserves all the love she can get.
