Owsley Stanley — “Bear”
Born January 19, 1935, in Kentucky—
the grandson of a the governor, destined to dismantle the system.😎
A certified genius and a dropout - Bear rejected institutional paths early despite excelling in science and mathematics. As well as studying ballet, developing a deep understanding of balance, timing, and physical rhythm—skills that later translated directly into sound.
Uninterested in authority but devoted to truth - Bear became one of the most influential sound engineers of all time, building the Wall of Sound and permanently changing how music was played, heard, and felt. 🥲
His obsession was sonic purity—no distortion, no shortcuts—redefined live audio.
Like clean music , he also produced clean L*D! 😂
Bear was the a devoted L*D chemist, quietly underwriting tours and creative freedom while expanding consciousness on both sides of the stage. His chemistry reached far beyond the Dead—touching and influencing a wider cultural circle including some of our favorite mentions in psychedelic history! - The Beatles , Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Ken Kesey, ect ⚡️🧪
An rockstar making , potion producing, bad ass wizard !
Inspiring/creating some of our best musicians , as well as some of the most know imagery we see today!
The S*F logo began as Bear’s vision—an image about identity, dissolution, and enlightenment.
With the help of Bob Thomas, that vision was brought into reality and became the symbol we all recognize today. ~ dig owsleys site for more info ! ⚡️
The marching Bears trace back to Bear as well. Through the artist initiative led by Stanley Mouse, a sketch of a bear wearing headphones at a soundboard—a nod to Owsley’s crucial role in live sound—was later animated and immortalized in album art.
Governor’s grandson.
College dropout.
Chemist. Engineer. Alchemist.
Bear didn’t just shape the 60’s —
he helped tune and enlighten an entire generation .
He caused a cataclysmic shift in not only the minds of the 60’s , but the music industry as well.
