⚠️ What You Should Know About Pertussis (Whooping Cough) ⚠️

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious bacterial illness that causes severe coughing spells. These coughing fits can make it difficult to eat, drink, or breathe and can be especially dangerous for infants and young children.

👶 Who can get pertussis?
Anyone can get pertussis at any age. It is most common in infants under one year old, but teens and adults can also become infected — often with milder, cold-like symptoms and a lingering cough.

🤧 Symptoms may include:
• Runny nose
• Mild cough that worsens over time
• Severe coughing fits
• Gasping for air with a “whooping” sound
• Vomiting after coughing
• Coughing fits that are often worse at night

📢 How it spreads:
Pertussis spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People nearby can breathe in the infected droplets.

🩺 If you think you or your child may have pertussis:
Contact your healthcare provider right away. Early treatment with antibiotics can help reduce how long someone is contagious.

💉 Prevention is key:
Routine vaccination is the best way to prevent pertussis. Vaccines are available through county health departments and private healthcare providers. Good hygiene — covering coughs, washing hands, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals — also helps protect others.

Every year, Davis County Hospital & Clinics recognizes a team member who goes above and beyond to make a real difference every day. This year, we are proud to announce that the 2025 Lighting the Way Award goes to James O’Dell! 👏

James may not love the spotlight, but he is the definition of a behind-the-scenes overachiever. He’s always a “yes” person, ready to help, willing to jump in, and consistently exceeding expectations. From projects big to small (and even ones outside his role as a Maintenance Engineer), James makes things happen.

Have you seen the giant Operation game? That was all James.
Enjoy our lighted Christmas parade float? It wouldn’t be possible without his handy work.

James truly lights the way, turning ideas into reality and making our hospital a better place for patients, staff, and our community.

We had so much fun at the Holiday Hullaballoo, hosted by our Senior Team, yesterday! 🎄✨ We celebrated our 2025 Lighting the Way Award winner, enjoyed popcorn and a hot cocoa bar, played some Bingo, and snapped fun photos to get everyone into the holiday spirit.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate our team and share some festive cheer together! 💙💚

There’s truly nothing like our DCHC team. Hardworking, creative, and always ready to have a little fun. We’re so lucky to work alongside such an amazing group of people! 💙💚

It’s definitely a snowball fight kind of day outside — which reminds us of our awesome Holiday Float and puts us right into the holiday spirit! ❄️⛄🎄

Our float was inspired by the iconic snowball fight scene from the movie Elf, and it was so much fun bringing that moment to life. 💚🎅
