Yikes đŹ One good reason not to drink sugary drinks.
Think sugary drinks are harmless? Think again.
A 20-year-old woman in Taiwan underwent surgery to remove more than 300 kidney stones.
The cause of the rare and alarming case? Doctors linked it to her near-total avoidance of water in favor of bubble tea (a very sugary drink).
The woman, identified only as Xiao-yu, was admitted to Chi Mei Medical Centre in Tainan with severe lower back pain and a fever. Imaging scans revealed that her right kidney was swollen and packed with stones ranging from 5mm to 2cm, prompting emergency minimally invasive surgery. Doctors described the removed stones as looking like "small steamed buns."
According to urologist Dr. Lim Chye-yang, the patient's extreme preference for sugary drinks likely contributed to her condition, as dehydration and concentrated urine can cause minerals to crystallize into stones.
While kidney stones typically affect older individualsâmost often men aged 50 to 60âthis case serves as a stark reminder that young people are not immune, especially if poor hydration habits persist.
In Taiwan, up to 9.6% of the population may develop kidney stones in their lifetime, and hot weather seasons raise the risk. Doctors urge the public to drink more plain water and cut back on sweetened beverages to prevent similar cases.
