Let me be clear: Low vision isnโ€™t about being legally blind or a number on an eye chart.

Itโ€™s about how your vision works in daily life. Missing faces in a crowd, struggling to read a menu, or feeling exhausted just trying to keep upโ€”thatโ€™s low vision.

In our most recent article, "Not Blind Enough": Low Vision and Blindness are a Spectrum," we discuss what people really mean when they say theyโ€™re โ€œnot blind enough,โ€ why blindness is a spectrum, the emotional toll of living in the "gray zone," and why you donโ€™t have to be legally blind to benefit from low vision care.

โ€œVision rehabilitation is the primary treatment option for patients with irreversible vision impairment and low vision. There is strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of these services. The sooner patients receive low vision rehabilitation services, the more they stand to gain.โ€
--David J. Ramsey, MD, PhD, MPH

Referral for low vision rehabilitation is uneven, and clinicians may be overlooking eligible patients, according to a study published in Life.โ€œDespite evidence supporting the effectiveness of LVR and its growing availability, utilization of LVR in the U.S. remains low,โ€ study author Davi...

When people say theyโ€™re โ€œnot blind enough,โ€ they often mean this: You have too much vision to qualify for services, but not enough to function like you used to, or like other people do. Stuck in this "gray zone," others may question your vision. And over time, you may start questioning yourself. The emotional toll of low vision is real, but there is help.

If you've been diagnosed with Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy, you may find that your experience is very different from someone else's with the condition.

That's because the severity of Fuchsโ€™ can vary from person to person. Some people live their entire lives with only mild Fuchsโ€™ and never need surgery. Others progress to significant corneal swelling that interferes with daily life.

The important point to remember is that this condition exists on a spectrum, and where you fall on that spectrum matters for proper treatment.

If you'd like to learn more about Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy, check out our most recent blog post where we talk about everything from causes to symptoms to treatment. https://midwestlowvision.com/what-is-fuchs-corneal-dystrophy/
