Zac Turner Training and Nutrition

Zac Turner Training and Nutrition I will use my experience and the most reliable, current evidence to design an individualized trainin

I have had a passion for all things fitness and nutrition for as long as I can remember. I grew up in the gym watching my mom teach group fitness classes and can remember sneaking out to the weight room to get in reps on the military press machine whenever I had the chance. Growing up, training became my outlet and my interest grew stronger; I asked questions, experimented and read everything I could about training, programming, nutrition, supplements, etc. As time went on people saw how passionate I was and the changes I was able to make in my physique/performance and I became the go-to guy for all things training and nutrition related. Starting off my focus was mostly on bodybuilding and body composition change (muscle gain/fat loss), but since then I have coached and competed in CrossFit, trained athletes for sport performance, and coached and competed in powerlifting. Much like my background in training has evolved over the years so has my experience with nutrition. Having come from a family background riddled with easily preventable health issues I took special interest in learning what it means to have a ‘healthy diet’. Starting off with a focus on bodybuilding I, of course, first learned about/experimented with ‘clean’ eating which was the only way to do it at the time. Later down the line I started counting my ‘macros’, not really knowing they were macros at the time, so I could make substitutions for some of the very restrictive so called ‘clean foods’. While drinking the CrossFit kool-aid and going against everything I had learned to do in the past I even did paleo for a while. If there is one thing I have learned from learning about and experimenting with so many different ‘diets’ and training styles it’s that there is no one magical prescription that works for everyone and for BEST results there has to be an individualized approach to both training and nutrition. I will rely on my widely varied experience and the most reliable and current evidence to design an individualized training and nutrition program to help you meet your goals, whatever they may be.

Charging hard after your health/fitness goals without a plan is kind of like photo 1

This is all to common after a bad weekend of eating, maybe a vacation, time off from training, or just finding yourself in a spot you don't want to be in.

A better use of your time would be to specifically define your goals, the appropriate duration to achieve said goals, and then breaking it down into actionable habits. Better yet add someone to help keep you accountable and you'll be much more likely to reach your destination! See photo 2

One of the most important steps you can take before starting your health/fitness journey is defining your 'WHY'. These are the big picture items tied to your values that are the real motivators for taking action. I.e be able to keep up with my kids at the beach vs. look like Daniel Craig in Casino Royale... These kind of things are the big 'WHYs' that keep you focused when the path gets challenging!

Nothing makes me happier than hearing my clients experience the benefits of their efforts in the gym (and kitchen) in their day to day life!

Know your WHY and work the plan 💪🏻

Re-post from my client Hillary:

"About a month ago, I reached out to Zac. I knew I needed someone to hold me accountable again to get my ass back in gear. It may seem from a social media stand point that I always have my s**t together but guess what, I don’t. Is my nutrition or my workouts always 100% perfect. Not even close! Working with Zac I am keeping track of my nutrition and figuring what foods work with my body and which ones don’t has been fun! He is always adjusting my workout program to suit it for me and what my goals are. He answers all questions I have, no matter how silly they seem. I’ve been on this journey for 4 years and although I’m very knowledage in nutrition and fitness, there is always something new to learn. Zac has been a great fit for me and I look forward to reaching more goals with his help! "

6 month checkin = 35lbs lost!

I love when a plan comes together! Shannon had some serious goals to lose body fat so we planned things out and broke it into phases that aligned with her other time/social constraints. More specifically, maintenance phase to break up part of summer to enjoy her social life!

This allowed her to stay focused on the task at hand and manage fatigue better than constant dieting over this period of time. This in turn set up for success to lose fat again later as we worked maintenance calories up to a comfy 2400ish per day!

Now comes the hard work of reversing and shifting focus to performance/muscle gain!

Moral of story: plan your work and work your plan! Don't try to fit a square peg (ex: fat loss phase) into a round hole (ex: holiday season), it's not worth the guilt/frustration/etc.. time is always on your side as long as you never quit!!

'The Willpower Instinct' has been an interesting read so far. I've enjoyed the data an examples discussed and, not surprisingly, it aligns with many strategies for success with nutrition/training goals!

Such as: 'don't count your chickens before they hatch' or give yourself the 'license' to cheat now because you plan to do better later (eat a bigger lunch because your planning to workout later).

One option could be to 'Checkin' and journal instances like this and whether or not you followed through on your planned 'good' intentions later. Also disassociating these behaviors as 'good/bad' in the first place and more in-line or not in-line with long term goals would be wise as well.

Revisit your WHY and what you want to accomplish and often it can make momentary decision making fall in-line with long-term goals.

Achieving your body composition goals is often times a long-term process split out into several different phases.

In this case Ricky started with a fat loss phase over a 10 week period and lost just about 20lbs. However, IMHO, then comes the hard part of transitioning into a 'weight maintenance' period while we add calories back in gradually (reverse diet). By sticking to the plan we're now all set to push and get after another fat loss phase and keep making moves!

If you struggle to stay focused during your maintenance/reverse it can be helpful to shift your mindset from being body composition oriented to performance oriented. Push more weight/volume in the gym, faster paces or more time doing cardio, etc so you can keep your eye on the prize during this critical period which sets you up for FUTURE success!

Luke has been making major body composition improvements this past month and is starting to hit his stride, looking forward to seeing what another month of discipline and hard work will uncover! I'm guessing oblique veins are on their way back again! 💪🏻
