This Indigenous Peoples Day, UFCW Local 1167 honors the strength, history, and contributions of Indigenous communities.
We acknowledge that the fight for dignity, respect, and workers’ rights is deeply connected to the broader struggle for justice for Indigenous peoples. Their stewardship of the land, their traditions of collective care, and their long fight against exploitation inspire our continued commitment to equity and solidarity for all workers.
We stand in respect and solidarity with Indigenous communities—today and every day—as we continue working toward a more just and inclusive future.

In North Texas, workers at Albertsons locations are trying to join the union because of the low pay, unpredictable hours, and disrespect from their management.
But instead of respecting these workers' rights to join a union, Albertsons is interrogating and intimidating them. They're trying to intimidate workers into not exercising their rights, apparently because they believe the community isn't paying attention.
But customers like you can make a difference: if you want to shop at a company that respects its workers and creates good-paying jobs, sign this petition to tell Albertsons: Respect your workers, respect our community!

SIGH THE PETITION
Tell Albertsons to respect your workers' right to join a union!

UFCW Local 1167 Honors the Life and Legacy of UFCW LOCAL 324 President Andrea Zinder
UFCW Local 1167 joins our brothers and sisters of UFCW Local 324 in mourning the unexpected passing of current UFCW LOCAL 324 President Andrea Zinder on September 27, 2025.
Andrea was more than a leader—she was a tireless advocate for workers and a true friend to all in the Labor Movement. From her early work at the National Labor Relations Board to her decades of service at UFCW Locals 770 and 324, Andrea dedicated her life to improving the lives of working families. Her leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to justice left an indelible mark on our union and beyond.
As President of UFCW 324, Andrea led members through some of the most challenging times in our history—guiding them through the pandemic, natural disasters, and times of civil unrest—with strength, courage, and compassion. Her efforts secured historic contracts for workers across industries, from grocery and healthcare to cannabis retail and entertainment. She always put members first, leading by example on the picket line and at the bargaining table.
Her impact was felt far beyond her own Local. As President of the UFCW Western States Council and through her service on numerous boards and trust funds, Andrea’s influence and vision extended across California and the entire Labor Movement.
On behalf of UFCW Local 1167, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Andrea’s family, friends, and all our sisters and brothers at Local 324. We honor her memory with deep gratitude for her lifetime of service, her courage, and her unwavering belief in the power of workers standing together.
Andrea Zinder’s legacy will continue to inspire us all.

Join UFCW Local 1167 in remembering former Meat Cutters Local 439 President James S. “Jim” Bird, who passed away last week at the age of 94. Jim’s life reflected both a proud family tradition in the meat-cutting trade and a lifelong commitment to the labor movement.
Born in Long Beach and raised in Brawley and Barstow, Jim carried forward a legacy that began with his grandfather, James Guy Bird, a pioneering butcher in Southern California, and his father, Guy Shelby Bird, who opened the first refrigerated meat market in Brawley in 1929. Jim began his own career humbly, first at a gas station before serving in the California National Guard during the Korean War. Returning home, he worked as a meat cutter at Safeway in Riverside, later joining Stater Bros. in Pomona, where he gained respect for his skill and dedication to the craft.
In 1966, Jim began his career in union leadership as a business agent for Meat Cutters Local 439. By 1978, he was elected president, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 1994. His leadership spanned some of the most challenging years for labor unions, guiding members through strikes, employer opposition, and a rapidly changing industry. He was a fierce advocate for protecting health benefits, enforcing workplace dignity, and preserving hard-won rights. His passion often put him on the front lines—sometimes even behind bars—but his commitment to fairness and justice for working families never wavered.
Jim’s tenure was marked by strength, resilience, and integrity. He reminded members that strikes were never about greed but about holding the line on benefits and conditions essential to workers’ livelihoods. He carried forward a deep sense of pride in the craft of meat cutting and in the solidarity of union members who stood together through difficult times.

Jim Bird was not only a leader but a man whose life embodied service, courage, and dedication to his family, his trade, and his union brothers and sisters. His legacy will endure in the lives of those he represented and in the history of Southern California’s labor movement.

In Memoriam: William R. Lathrop
May 11, 1948 – August 29, 2025

With great sadness, UFCW Local 1167 announces the passing of Former President William R. Lathrop on August 29, 2025.
Bill’s distinguished career began as an apprentice Meat Cutter and concluded as one of the most respected and honored coalition builders in the history of Southern California’s Labor Movement.
Born in Bell Gardens, the son of Joe and Phyllis Lathrop, Bill was one of seven children. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and graduated from East Los Angeles College in 1971—the same year he began working at a Lucky store in West Covina, launching a lifelong career in the supermarket industry. Just two years later, he stood on the picket line during his first strike as a member of Local 439, serving as a picket captain during the five-week labor dispute.
Bill’s passion for the labor movement grew quickly. He became a delegate to the Los Angeles Federation of Labor and the San Bernardino/Riverside Central Labor Council (CLC). In 1981, he was hired as a union representative for Local 439, later serving as secretary-treasurer until 1995, when the Meat Cutters local merged with the UFCW to form Local 1167. That same year, he was elected president of the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties CLC, where he worked tirelessly to unite labor unions, community groups, clergy, and elected officials in the fight for working people.
In 2001, Bill succeeded Bill Sauriol as president of UFCW Local 1167. For the next 14 years, he guided the union’s 18,000 members through contract negotiations, organizing campaigns, and political initiatives. He played a pivotal role in the historic 141-day supermarket strike and lockout of 2003–2004, which affected tens of thousands of grocery workers across Southern California.
Bill’s leadership extended beyond Local 1167. In 2008, he was elected president of the UFCW Western States Council, where he championed pro-worker legislation. That same year, he was honored as Labor Warrior of the Year. Over the years, he was recognized with numerous awards, including Labor Leader of the Year by both the San Bernardino/Riverside CLC (2009) and Instituto De La Raza (2012). He was also celebrated as Labor Leader of the Decade by the San Bernardino/Riverside CLC and was recognized by the Riverside NAACP for his contributions to social and economic justice.
“Bill Lathrop is the sort of leader who leads by example, providing a model of humility, optimism, and a relentless pursuit of excellence for everyone else to admire and follow,” said Joe Duffle, current president of UFCW Local 1167. “Anyone who spent five minutes with Bill could see why his colleagues were so fond of him. When times got stressful, he was always ready with a story to ease the tension and guide everyone toward a positive outcome.”
Bill retired on December 31, 2014, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and dedication to working families that will never be forgotten.
UFCW Local 1167 extends its deepest condolences to the Lathrop family, Bill’s many friends, and all who were touched by his life and leadership.

Stater Bros. Markets Negotiation Update for 8/15/25
Congratulations to Stater Bros. Members on ratifying a new three-year agreement. Taking the time to vote ensured your voice was heard.

Our fight isn’t over though. Members at El Super are also still without a contract, and our pharmacist siblings at Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions are gearing up for their fight next year. They all stood by us to get this contract; now we have to stand by them.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with your Union Representative.

The UFCW is proud to endorse the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act, led by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. This critical legislation would ban unfair and discriminatory practices like using personal data to charge shoppers different prices for the same items, and stop grocery executives from hiking prices in seconds with electronic shelf labels.
Families are already struggling with grocery prices up more than 28% since 2020. Everyone deserves the same fair price at the register, no matter who they are.
Together, we’re standing with working families, consumers, and the union members who keep our grocery stores running.
