This week we are excited to share the story of the family who had the 1500th baby at the Birth Center of Bloomington-Normal.

Cassidy and Dalton Miller have been happily married for nearly five years and are proud parents to a son and a daughter—both of whom were born at the birth center. After their experiences at the birth center, they felt a strong pull to share their story with others. To share why they decided to transfer care to the birth center part way through their first pregnancy, what they experienced here, and how they feel looking back on the birth of their babies.

Oxytocin is often called the “love hormone,” but in birth it’s also the power hormone.

It’s what drives contractions, helps your cervix open, supports placental release, and later helps with bonding and milk let-down.

What many people don’t realize is that oxytocin flows best when you feel safe. Privacy, calm lighting, familiar faces, and continuous support all help your body do what it was designed to do. Stress and adrenaline, on the other hand, can slow labor down.

Research shows that continuous, supportive care in labor is associated with shorter labors, lower cesarean rates, and higher satisfaction.

That’s why environment matters.
Birth works best when you feel safe — because when you feel safe, oxytocin flows. 🤍

The midwives listen to your baby’s heartbeat at planned intervals during labor (called intermittent auscultation) instead of monitors strapped to your belly for continuous electronic monitoring — not because we’re doing “less,” but because research shows that for people with low-risk pregnancies, this approach supports safe outcomes and freedom of movement, without increasing risks to baby or the birthing person. Continuous monitoring doesn’t reduce serious complications, but it does increase interventions like cesarean sections — so we use evidence-based care that protects your body’s physiology while keeping you and your baby safe (Wattar et al., 2021)

Less intervention doesn’t mean less care. It means thoughtful care. It means we don’t interrupt normal physiology unless there’s a reason to. It means your body gets space to do what it was designed to do — with skilled midwives quietly monitoring and supporting along the way.

Oh our hearts 🥹💗

For “Be a Leader Day” at school, Stella chose to be a midwife — just like her mama, Justine. Complete with her stethoscope, badge, and baby in arms, she reminded us that leadership isn’t always loud… sometimes it looks like holding space, caring deeply, and taking care of babies. 💛

We love seeing the next generation already inspired by the sacred work of birth. Stella, you are already a beautiful little leader. 💜✨

⏱️ Delayed cord clamping is a gentle way to support babies right after birth.

🩸 After your baby is born, the umbilical cord keeps
pulsing for a little while, sending extra blood from the
placenta to your baby. Waiting to clamp the cord lets
that natural transfer finish, giving babies a smoother
transition to life outside the womb.

🤍 When it’s safe, delayed cord clamping is a normal
part of care at the birth center — and something we
talk through together so it feels right for you and your
baby.

✨ Safety is the foundation of everything we do.

🩺 Freestanding birth centers provide evidence-based care for low-risk pregnancies, with trained midwives, emergency equipment on site, and clear protocols for when something falls outside of normal.

🤍 Birth center care is not about avoiding medicine or hospitals — it’s about choosing the right level of care for the right pregnancy, at the right time.

Choosing where to receive care during pregnancy can come with a lot of questions — and that’s normal. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

Our outreach coordinator is here to talk through the details, answer questions, and help you understand how birth center care works — from what prenatal visits look like and what to expect during labor and postpartum to the safety of birth at the birth center.

These calls are informational, not a commitment. They’re simply a space to ask honest questions, get clear answers, and decide what feels right for you and your family.

If you’re curious, unsure, or just want to talk things through, we invite you to schedule a call. We’re here to help you feel informed and supported every step of the way. Schedule a call today at birthcenterbn.com/schedulecall

In episode 385 of the Evidence Based Birth podcast, one of our former clients reflects on her journey from a medicated first birth—without formal childbirth education—to a healing, empowered birth here at The Birth Center of Bloomington-Normal.

She shares how intentional education and the support of the midwives here changed everything, saying: “Taking a birth class, that’s huge! Huge, huge, huge. I would tell anyone, ‘take a birth class.’ An actual in-person birth class where you are with other expecting mothers and you are with an instructor… that is very helpful.”

We’re grateful she trusted us with her care and for this powerful reminder of how education, community, and supportive birth care can transform the birth experience.
