โญ๏ธ1. Control Horse Movementโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Quarantine new arrivals for 14โ€“21 days.
โ€ข Keep show/traveling horses separate from the resident herd when they return.
โ€ข Do not share equipment (buckets, halters, grooming tools) between horsesโ€”especially newcomers.

โญ 2. Hygiene & Sanitationโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Wash hands between handling horses, especially sick ones.
โ€ข Clean and disinfect:
โ€ข Stalls between occupants
โ€ข Trailers after travel
โ€ข Common equipment (thermometers, grooming tools, twitches)
โ€ข Use effective disinfectants (e.g., bleach solution, chlorhexidine, accelerated hydrogen peroxide).

โญ 3. Monitor Horse Healthโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Take and record temperatures daily when:
โ€ข A new horse arrives
โ€ข Thereโ€™s an outbreak nearby
โ€ข Watch for early signs of illness:
โ€ข Fever
โ€ข Nasal discharge
โ€ข Coughing
โ€ข Lethargy
โ€ข Diarrhea

Early detection reduces spread.

โญ 4. Limit Horse-to-Horse Contactโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Avoid nose-to-nose contact at fences, shows, and trailering with unfamiliar horses.
โ€ข Do not share water sources at shows.

โญ 5. Vaccination & Parasite Controlโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Keep horses up-to-date on core vaccines (e.g., tetanus, West Nile, EEE/WEE, rabies) and any risk-based ones (flu/rhino, strangles, etc.). **the current EHV (neurological form) canโ€™t be vaccinated for**
โ€ข Use a veterinarian-guided parasite control plan with regular f***l tests.

โญ 6. Manage People & Visitorsโญ๏ธ
โ€ข Restrict stable access to essential personnel.
โ€ข Provide separate tools and clothing (boots, gloves) for visitors when needed.
โ€ข Have sick-horse protocols (designated sick area, no shared tools, isolated manure disposal).

We understand people are concerned and worried given the current EHV breakout โ€” if you have attended any of the events in Texas or your horses have been in contact with some that have, we ask that you monitor closely and we are always happy to reschedule any routine care (injections, etc) for after the 14 day period.

NEW ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR NEVADA

Effective 11/19/2025

All horses entering the state of Nevada from any location must have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) and obtain an entry permit number from the Nevada Department of Agriculture within seven (7) days of arrival. This requirement is in effect for all horses through December 31, 2025.

*** The entry permit is obtained by your veterinarian and listed on your CVI by your veterinarian

Arizona & Nevada have added the 21 day rule ANY horses that have been on the premises listed below, will not be allowed entry into Arizona or Nevada for the 21 days following exposure, not 21 days from today EVEN if horses are non-symptomatic.

These restrictions have been confirmed directly via phone conversations with Arizona and Nevada
"Departments of Agriculture"

Current Locations as of 11-20-2025 (Subject to Change) :
Extraco Events Center (Waco, TX)
377 Arena (Stephenville, TX)
Lazy E Arena (Guthrie, OK)
Jackson County (Edna, TX)

The vet has to write and attest the horse has not been on a premises with an EHV positive for the 21 days leading up to the health cert date. Not 21 days from today.

As we continue to monitor the current outbreak of the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus (EHM) infection, let's take this opportunity to discuss once more the importance of biosecurity measures to stop disease spread. We recommend the following biosecurity precautions for horse owners, particularly if their horses have recently traveled to horse shows or were exposed to horses that have traveled:

1) Monitor horses for clinical signs (including fever, discharge from the nostrils, toe-dragging or a lack of balance) and take the temperature twice daily. Temperature greater than 101.5 F is considered a fever.

2) Immediately isolate any horse(s) showing clinical signs. Equine herpesvirus is an aerosolized virus and is spread through shared airspace, direct contact, and contaminated caretakers or equipment. A good isolation area is a separate barn or shelter that does not share airspace with healthy horses.

3) Implement movement restrictions until the situation is evaluated.

4) Contact your veterinarian to evaluate your horse and to propose a comprehensive biosecurity protocol.

5) Increase biosecurity measures that include extensive cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and equipment that come in contact with affected horses: wash or sanitize your hands between interacting with horses; take time while filling water buckets and feed tubs, do not cross contaminate; minimize the use of shared equipment and tack.

6) Make sure your horse is up to date on vaccinations.

7) Establish communication with all parties involved (owners, boarders, trainers, etc.).

More resources and information regarding biosecurity are available on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at https://equinediseasecc.org/biosecurity

The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of EHM that originated at the Womenโ€™s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event Nov 5-9. To date, officially confirmed cases have been reported in the following states-

11/20/2025

The Utah State Veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Price, has been monitoring the equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak reported in multiple states. While no neurologic cases have been reported in Utah, the State Veterinarian's office is still receiving trace information from the affected states and contacting participants.

Out of an abundance of caution, Dr. Price is recommending that all roping and barrel racing events in Utah, including this weekend's UHSRA Dixie Rodeo in Hurricane, be postponed until after December 2. For more information on EHV-1, please visit the UDAF Animal Health webpage at https://ag.utah.gov/animal-industry/animal-health-program/ or contact statevet@utah.gov.
