Trauma Informed Care Vol. 1 | Avoidance

Avoidance can feel like you are stuck.

We might avoid certain places, conversations, or even our own thoughts because something inside of us is trying to keep us safe. If an experience felt overwhelming or unresolved, it makes sense that a part of you would want distance from anything that reminds you of it.

Though we may only feel stuck in avoidance, when we can offer it compassionate care we can often then begin to see that it may be protecting us. Protecting us from feeling something that it doesn’t believe we are safe to feel.

Trauma-informed care helps us gently understand what we’re avoiding and why, without forcing change before we’re ready. Healing doesn’t come from pushing through. It comes from creating enough safety to slowly turn toward what feels hard.

What is Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. It is called “Internal Family Systems” because it views the mind as made up of different parts that interact like members of a family system.

For example:
There may be a part of you that worries.
A part that criticizes.
A part that protects.
A part that avoids.
A part that feels deeply wounded.

These parts often developed to help you survive earlier experiences.

IFS teaches that beneath all of these parts is your core Self. The Self is calm, compassionate, curious, and grounded. The goal of therapy is not to eliminate parts, but to help them trust your Self-leadership so they do not have to work so hard.

Why does this matter?
Because often the behaviors we dislike about ourselves are protective parts trying to keep us safe. When we approach them with curiosity instead of shame, healing becomes possible.

You are not broken. You are layered. Curious about IFS? Let’s talk.

Why do we say trauma-informed care? 🩵 We are looking forward to starting a new series diving into what this means. We will be talking about ways trauma may show up in your life like:

• Difficulty trusting others
• Feeling on edge or easily startled
• Emotional numbness
• Overexplaining or overapologizing
• Avoidance
• Sudden anger or shutdown
• Chronic exhaustion
• People-pleasing to stay safe

Trauma-informed care understands that these responses are not character flaws. They are adaptations. Healing is not about forcing yourself to “just move on.”
It is about honoring how your nervous system learned to survive.

We’re so excited to welcome a new therapist to the Peace by Piece Therapy community!

Nina Schroth, LPC is now accepting new clients for 1:1 therapy, with immediate openings available. Nina offers virtual sessions for clients in South Carolina and Ohio, as well as one in-person day each week in Charleston, SC.

Nina brings over a decade of experience in private practice and holds a Master of Science in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. Trained in EDMR, her work supports individuals navigating depression, anxiety, trauma/PTSD, self-esteem challenges, communication struggles, anger management, and life transitions.

What makes Nina’s approach especially unique is her integration of traditional counseling with mind-body practices. In addition to her clinical work, she has over fifteen years of experience as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT), allowing her to thoughtfully blend western therapeutic models with eastern approaches that support nervous system regulation and whole-person healing.

Nina believes counseling can be a powerful first step toward living with greater health, clarity, and wholeness, and she is passionate about creating a space rooted in empathy, listening, and meaningful change.
