As we age, falls become more frequent and can cause more injury. Set yourself up for success by being aware of safety within your home. Look at your area rugs, the amount of space between furniture like between coffee tables and chairs, check for cables and other hazards that you might not notice. Also think about adding night lights in your hallway for when you’re walking around your home at night.

If you would like any more tips on how you can prevent falls in your home or in the community, give us a call at Cornerstone Physical Therapy & Wellness!

Cornerstone Physical Therapy & Wellness would like to introduce Dr. Jessica Galasso! Dr. Jess graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Gannon University in 2019 and received her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Slippery Rock University in 2015.

Dr. Jess has been apart of the Cornerstone team from almost 3 years and recently became Board-Certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy. Let's get to know Dr. Jess better with these 5 questions:

1. Why did you become PT/ATC?
I grew up always being involved in sports and had some injuries of my own, so I was able to spend some time with my athletic trainer and physical therapist. I became an athletic trainer first and then decided to go on to be a physical therapist because I really enjoyed the rehab side of things the most. I love helping people and seeing the progression of them getting better.

2. What is your favorite injury/condition to treat and why?
I enjoy treating low back pain because it is challenging and there’s a lot of aspects that go into it. I also enjoy treating total knee replacements because of the progress they make.

3. What do you like to do in your free time?
A lot of my free time goes to taking care of my dog Lola. I also enjoy running, biking, kayaking, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

4. What is your favorite sports team?
Pittsburgh Penguins is my favorite team, but also a fan of the Steelers and Pirates as well.

5. What is your favorite place you’ve traveled?
Ireland was my favorite trip. We did a spring break trip with the athletic training program and was able to travel the country for 10 days.

The New Year is right around the corner. Most of us will be making resolutions for 2022. Before you make your resolutions, here are some fun, interesting facts about resolutions that people make.

- Statistics say that about 30% of people don’t bother to make a New Year’s resolution because they know they won’t keep the resolution.

- Only about 8% of people do actually keep their resolutions for the year.

- 22% of resolutions fail after the first week.
- 40% of resolutions fail after a month.
- 50% of resolutions will fail after the first three months.
- 60% of resolutions fail after six months.

- Those that do make a New Year’s resolution are ten times more likely to achieve their goals when they vocalize their plans and ideas. Those who do not vocalize the goal as a New Year’s resolution, often fail.

A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life at the start of a new year.

Making resolutions signifies our desire to take a step towards positive change. Even if we are unsuccessful in making all the changes we hope to, actually making a resolution will at least focus us, and take us a few steps forward.

At Cornerstone Physical Therapy & Wellness we set "Resolutions" or Goals everyday for our patients. By setting a specific goal, this will help keep you focused on becoming a better You.

So you have Incontinence...... Do you know which type? There are actually five different types that are out there affecting millions of people. There could be some effects on treatment depending on which type you have, so it matters to know.

The five types are Stress, Urge, Overflow, Neurogenic/Functional and Mixed.

1. Stress Incontinence is when there is a pressure on the bladder that causes leakage. The pressure is caused by laughing, coughing, lifting, sneezing, jumping, etc. Weakness of the pelvic floor usually triggers stress incontinence.

2. Urge Incontinence is when you have that sudden urge to GO RIGHT NOW! That sudden urge then causes leakage because of an involuntary contraction of muscles. This type could be caused by weakness, infection, diabetes or even certain neurological conditions.

3. Overflow Incontinence is when there is a blockage or incomplete emptying of the bladder that then causes leakage.

4. Neurogenic/Functional Incontinence is caused when there is a mental or physical impairment that keeps you from making it to the toilet in time. An example of this would be person that suffered from a stroke that does not realize they have to go to the bathroom or can't get their pants unbutton quick enough.

5. Mixed Incontinence is the combination multiple other types that one person experiences.

All of these types can be treated so don't be afraid to talk about it with your physician or give us a call at Cornerstone Physical Therapy & Wellness.

Yesterday we talked about why Relaxation of your Pelvic Floor was good for you. Here are two good exercises you can try to help relax your Pelvic Floor:

1. Abdominal Stretch - Laying with a pillow or ball under your back and allow your arms to go over your head causing a stretch with in the abdominals. Hold for 15 seconds and perform 3 repetitions.

2. Diaphragmatic Breathing - Sitting in a chair, place one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Breathing at rest should occur using diaphragm (muscle underneath lungs). With inhalation the diaphragm drops pushing stomach out. Then during exhalation the diaphragm rises bring stomach inward. Use hands to monitor sequence. Full breathing in and out with this stretch. This can allow full relaxation to musculature especially pelvic floor.
