Donors are sometimes asked to give a booster of white blood cells (a donor leukocyte infusion) a few months after the transplant to help their recipient in the recovery process.

More rarely, a donor may match with an entirely different patient and have the opportunity to save another life! 💙

Cheek swab kits are tested for Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA), which are a key part of the immune system. HLA markers are inherited from our parents, just like hair or eye color, so patients have the best chance of finding a match with someone who shares a similar ancestry or genetic heritage.

Curious about how recipient updates work after donation? 🤔 Transplant centers may send recovery updates to Gift of Life Marrow Registry, and whenever we receive them, we make sure to pass the news along to you.

Keep in mind that every center follows its own schedule, and some do not send updates at all. Thank you for your patience and compassion as each recipient’s recovery journey is unique.

Meet Julius and Alec this . 💙

Julius was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia at 14-years-old. His family was frightened, but hopeful as they waited for a donor. Alec, who joined the Gift of Life Marrow Registry during his 2018 Birthright Israel trip, became the one match Julius needed.

They met for the first time at One Huge Night NY in 2023, sharing tears, gratitude, and a moment no one will forget.

“You not only saved Julius’s life, but our family,” said Julius’s father.
Alec said, “The real heroes are Julius and his family.”

College-aged donors give patients the highest chance at a successful transplant. According to our donor guidelines, younger donors produce stronger, more active stem cells, and doctors request donors between the ages of 18 and 35 most often. Students play a critical role in saving lives, which is why our Campus Ambassadors work to educate their campuses and grow the registry every day.

Last night at with the Nashville Predators, donor Hayden met his William for the very first time. 🏒

Hayden swabbed his cheek at FarmHouse fraternity at Mississippi State University when Gift of Life visited the chapter. He joined hoping he could help someone facing cancer, and years later he learned he was a match for a patient in need.

That patient was William, who had been diagnosed with AML (BPDCN). His family spent months waiting and hoping a donor would be found. When William was told there was a match, he felt relieved and grateful to have a second chance at life.

Meeting at the game last night brought their story full circle and gave both families a moment they will never forget. 💜
