Here are 2 supplements that I often recommend to my rhinoplasty patients:
1️⃣ ARNICA MONTANA
Arnica is an herb that can help reduce bruising and swelling after surgery. There are many different species, but Arnica montana is the most commonly used species in commercially produced products.
Arnica demonstrates the paradox of homeopathic medicine - the less concentrated the drug, the stronger or more efficacious it is. Each time the drug is diluted by a factor of 10 or 100 or more, it becomes more potent. It can be taken orally or applied topically in the form of a cream or ointment. For rhinoplasty patients, because you will have tape & a cast over your nose and part of your face, the oral form is recommended.
💊 Dose: If taking the 30C dose, dissolve 5 tablets under your tongue 3 times per day
👉🏻 Instructions: Start taking the day before surgery and continue for 2 weeks after surgery
⚠️ Precautions: Topical arnica shouldn't be used on broken skin

2️⃣ BROMELAIN
Bromelain is a natural enzyme derived from the pineapple plant. It can reduce inflammation and swelling after surgery. It can be taken as a supplement or consumed in the form of fresh pineapple.
💊 Dose: 500 mg, 2 times per day
👉🏻 Instructions: Start taking the day before surgery and continue for 2 weeks after surgery
⚠️ Precautions: Caution is advised in people who have bleeding disorders, are taking anticoagulants, & those with heart and/or liver disease

❗️These are not appropriate for everyone. It's important to discuss any vitamins, supplements, or other homeopathic products you take with your surgeon well in advance of your surgery to minimize your risks and optimize your safety during surgery & recovery. ❗️

With all the resources available, I cannot imagine how hard it might be to choose a rhinoplasty surgeon 😩. This is no small task - choosing a surgeon that will operate on your face, the center of it, no less - can be a very overwhelming and scary process. Listed above are just 4️⃣ of the many criteria that you should look for when choosing a rhinoplasty ( ) surgeon. These criteria are not listed in any particular order, and this list above is not even close to complete.

✨ What do *I* think is he most important criteria? ✨

Hint- It’s not listed above. The most important criteria is that your potential rhinoplasty surgeon understands how the nose functions and how can changing the appearance will impact its function. ⚠️ Remember, the most common reason patience seek a revision rhinoplasty is because of nasal obstruction! ⚠️

4️⃣ SIMPLE CARBS 🥯
Carbs are an important nutrient found in numerous types of foods. Broadly speaking, carbs are divided into simple or complex carbs. SIMPLE carbs are basically sugars. COMPLEX carbs pack in more nutrients, are higher in fiber, and digest more slowly. As a result of surgery, your metabolism will be elevated, which increases the body’s calorie requirements. Calories obtained from complex carbohydrates such as whole grains 🍞, starchy vegetables 🌽, and legumes 🥬 will provide the energy your body needs to heal. Avoid simple carbohydrates found in foods such as pastries 🍩, desserts 🍪, candy 🍭, soda 🥤, and ice cream 🍦.

5️⃣ CAFFEINE ☕️
We recommend that you can have caffeine up to two days before surgery. It is best to stop drinking caffeine two days before surgery to avoid headaches 🤕that you may have when you stop drinking it. On the day of surgery and for at least the next week, you should stay away from caffeine as it increases blood pressure and can increase bruising. Because you won’t be drinking caffeine during those days, you may get a withdrawal headache. People who drink coffee every day and then stop for a day tend to get this.

6️⃣ SPICY FOODS 🌶️
There’s no doubt that spicy foods offer plenty of benefits, including reducing body inflammation. However, it is best to avoid spicy foods for the first week after rhinoplasty to avoid nausea 🤢, interfere with anesthesia, and other side effects.

Your diet plays a huge role in your recovery after a rhinoplasty. Here are some of the top foods to avoid, Part 1!

Alcohol
It is strongly encouraged to avoid consuming alcohol after a rhinoplasty. During the first couple of days, alcohol consumption can interfere with the anesthesia and cause serious and unpleasant side effects. It can greatly increase the recovery time and can contribute to worsening swelling. While it is technically possible in most cases to have alcohol past the first week of surgery, it is best to avoid it till the swelling has significantly resolved.

Chewy Foods
Hard to chew and sticky foods are on top of the list of foods to avoid after rhinoplasty. Your nose moves slightly with the chewing motion. While under usual circumstances, a little movement is fine, as your nose heals from surgery, you want it to remain as still as possible to reduce the chance of any complications. Hold off on enjoying a steak dinner, tearing into some candy, or even popping a piece of chewing gum in your mouth until your surgeon says it’s OK to do so. Keep in mind that you aren’t limit to a diet of very soft, mushy foods for weeks after surgery. You just want to avoid the particularly chewy options.

Salty Foods
Salt and high-sodium foods cause swelling and greatly increase rhinoplasty recovery time. As a precautionary measure, it is best to plan a rhinoplasty recovery diet that’s low on sodium. It would help you recover faster and ensure you get back to normal life much earlier than anticipated!

This patient is 6 months out from her procedure 👃🏻. She is breathing fantastic and absolutely loves her new nose. I’m obviously biased but I LOVE her nose too! 😍
