When President Emmanuel Macron took to the stage in Davos, Switzerland yesterday wearing blue-tinted aviator-style glasses, people began to speculate. A bold fashion choice or a medical condition?

According to French media outlets, President Macron has a subconjunctival hemorrhage. It looks scary, but it’s usually harmless and often heals on its own. Link in bio to read more.

A subconjunctival hemorrhage happens when one or more blood spots appear on the white of your eye. The eye’s conjunctiva contains a lot of tiny blood vessels that can break. If they break, blood leaks between the conjunctiva and sclera. This bleeding is the bright red spot that you see on the white of your eye.

Causes include: coughing, sneezing, straining, or other similar actions most commonly cause subconjunctival hemorrhages. This is because they briefly raise blood pressure in your veins. That quick pressure rise can cause capillaries to break.

Trauma or injury to the eye can also cause subconjunctival hemorrhage. Even rubbing your eyes too hard might cause capillaries to break.

Depending on how big the spot is, it could take a few days or a few weeks to resolve.

In the deafblind community, drawing an “X” on someone’s back means one thing, we’re in danger and we need to leave.

It’s not official sign language, but it’s a fast, effective way to communicate danger when you can’t rely on sight or sound.

But honestly, anyone could use this. In loud, dark, or chaotic environments like festivals, protests, or even clubs. tactile cues like this are powerful.

It’s a simple tool that could make you feel safer. Pass it on.

About 20 million U.S. adults are living with some form of age-related macular degeneration. Current treatments slow the disease, but none restore vision.

U-M researchers used retinal pigment epithelial stem cells derived from adult postmortem eye tissue in a phase 1/2a clinical trial. The treatment was safe and the participants experienced improved vision in the transplanted eye, hinting that the approach could provide a new therapeutic avenue.
