It's BOOK RELEASE DAY! Dr. Marni Jacob's book, What to Do When You Have a Tricky, Sticky, Picky Brain: Cognitive Behavioral Strategies for Kids with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, is available!
The book is evidence-based and grounded in CBT with ERP, yet is enhanced by ACT principles, inhibitory learning, and motivational interviewing to boost motivation, engagement, and progress. It addresses both common and often-overlooked presentations of OCD, including scrupulosity, disgust, intrusive thoughts related to harm or sexual content, emotional contamination, existential OCD, mental compulsions, PANS/PANDAS, and so many more common symptoms that are often seen but rarely written about in books. The hope is that all kids with OCD will see themselves reflected in the material, which will normalize symptoms and reduce shame and stigma.
The book also identifies common doubts, barriers, and resistance that can arise during treatment. It also uniquely features perspectives of Real Kids with OCD (ages 10-17) to enhance relatability to youth and reduce stigma. The book also offers practical advice on talking about OCD with parents, teachers, and peers; seeking support; setting goals; and relapse prevention.
At over 200 pages, with extensive and detailed review of symptoms, and discussions of many of the nuances that often arise with OCD, it has incredible breadth and depth that will hopefully be an incredible resource for children and teens with OCD!
