“When a Routine Eye Exam Becomes Life-Saving

A healthy 31-year-old firefighter came in for what we both thought was just a routine contact lens exam. No symptoms, no complaints.

During the exam, I noticed swelling of his optic nerves (right eye greater than left) and referred him to neuro-ophthalmology. MRI revealed something no one expected - a malignant brain tumor the size of an avocado. He was sent straight to the ER, and that night, they operated.

A few weeks later, I found a Starbucks gift card in my bin from him. Not long after, he showed up at the office asking to see me. When I walked up front, he gave me a huge hug and said, “You saved my life.” I was speechless as the truth of it sunk in, then mustered to share my true feelings that we should both thank God. He showed me before-and-after pictures of the surgery – see attached. He’ll undergo targeted radiation and chemotherapy, but his prognosis is good.

This case reminded me – again - that optometry is so much more than glasses and contact lenses. Comprehensive eye exams can reveal serious systemic disease. And sometimes, they truly save lives.“

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see WITHOUT the use of glasses or contacts lenses? And WITHOUT having to have surgery on your eyes? Well, now you can. Maybe. If you’re a good candidate, Ortho-K can finally give you the freedom and gift of sight!

But what is Ortho-K? How does it work? Ortho-K is a special pair of gas permeable contact lenses that are worn only at night while you sleep, to gently reshape your cornea and correct your vision. giving it the proper shape to bend light to give you the best sight possible. The fact that this procedure takes place while you sleep means that each morning, when you wake up, all you need to do is take out your contact lenses and you are able to enjoy improved eyesight up to 20/20 all day.

Myopia Awareness Week is a time for bringing myopia to the forefront of eye health, raising awareness about its impact, prevention, and management strategies to promote making healthy vision decisions worldwide.

Action is needed now more than ever; myopia is currently the most significant eye health threat of the 21st Century.

Myopia leads to an increased risk of serious eye conditions such as myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts that can lead to visual impairment or blindness. As seen in the graphic, these eye diseases become more prevalent as the levels of myopia increase.

Early, customized intervention (myopia control) plans have proven that the progression of myopia can be significantly slowed down or even stopped, and the subsequent risks from associated diseases also reduced.

It is important that children have regular eye examinations. Eye tests are even more critical if one or both parents are nearsighted.

Myopia: An epidemic of global proportions

A recent study predicted that 50% of the world’s population would be myopic (nearsighted) by the year 2050. FIFTY PERCENT! Myopia occurs when the ocular power of the eye and the axial length don’t match, resulting in blurred distance vision, with a typical onset between six to nine years of age. Progressive myopia, characterized by excessive elongation in the length of the eye, can result in diseases of the eye later in life, some of them vision threatening. These include cataracts, glaucoma, myopic macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.

Myopia is a global epidemic and a public health concern. Myopia management therapies SHOULD be the standard of care for all children with myopia, but many eye doctors simply prescribe glasses or contact lenses which correct vision but do nothing to slow the progression of myopia. Your eye doctor should be focused on the long-term consequences and present options to slow myopia progression, including low-dose atropine, soft (specialty) contact lenses, and orthokeratology lenses.

To learn more about the long-term risks of myopia and how you can take action for your child NOW, click the link in our bio, then schedule a consultation with our office.
