Today’s a great day for research so let’s do it! AAC implementation has four core strategies: Modeling without Expectation, Modeling with Expectations, The AAC Prompt Hierarchy, and Enhanced Milieu Teaching. These are foundational in AAC world but two out of the four often get overlooked (can you guess which ones). The AAC Prompt Hierarchy is how we slide from modeling without expectations to modeling with. It’s incredibly important not to overlook it. Enhanced Milieu Teaching encompasses effective therapeutic practices and is approach that’s been integrated into other approaches out there. If you’re looking for more resources like this one, head to my profile and sign up for early access to the AAC Survival Toolkit. This is literally a page right from the book. Post inspired by my colleagues that I have incredible respect for and thank you for pushing me to think critically and continue to reflect on my own practices.

I’ve been doing AAC for over 15 years, and today… I felt like I was failing. 🫣

It happened in the middle of a therapy session. I caught myself feeling stressed, pressured to model, and way too focused on the device instead of the human in front of me.

I had to literally stop and ask myself: “Malka, what are you doing here?” ✋

That one moment of reflection changed everything. I shifted my focus back to the activity. Did I model less? Maybe. But did we have more fun? Absolutely. If I still feel this pressure after 15 years, I know you do too. That’s exactly why I created the AAC Survival Toolkit. I want to empower you to feel confident, capable, and, most importantly, stress-free so you can focus on what actually matters: connection.

If I had to pick one AAC tool in my toolbox, I would pick the 96 location board from There are so many ways to model language in novel ways, with endless communication opportunities. I love that I laminated it using matte laminating sheets from it makes a huge difference in feel/texture and no glare (reduces sensory load). What’s the one tool you would pick? Comment below ⬇️

About 20 years ago, I volunteered in a parent respite program for disabled children. It was the first time in my life I met an Angel, a beautiful little girl with Angelman Syndrome. While I wish I could go back in time and give her the voice she deserved, I can only move forward. And that is why I commit to spreading awareness about Angelman Syndrome, something every speech-language pathologist should know. Children with Angelman Syndrome deserve to be heard, and that happens by acknowledging all the ways they communicate AND also giving them access to AAC. Join me in spreading awareness about Angelman Syndrome by sharing this message. I nominate to help spread awareness and understand the importance of AAC.

Simple ways to incorporate literacy with your children and students is using symbol-supported texts and predicable writing charts (PWC). Symbol-supported text is when you use one or two symbols to support comprehension and vocabulary development for non-speakers or limited speakers. I like to alternate between using a single word OR using the motor plan for a word on each page. For predicable writing charts you use a sentence stem and repeat that sentence, allowing space for individual student responses. The repetitive and predicable nature supports students’ independence with reading and writing. Be sure to line up the words for each sentence so students can see the pattern. Looking for more information on Predicable Writing Charts? Comment PWC below, and I’ll send you the link.

Lately I’ve been working with more medically complex clients which brings me so much joy. As a spiritual person, I believe we were all created with the ability to communicate. It’s with that belief that I approach every single client. I truly believe that every individual has the ability to communicate and WANTS to communicate. It’s on us to find the right access method and tool for connection. Complex access methods make it harder but we need to push through. Every person deserves to communicate, EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. Approaching complex clients with this belief doesn’t make me special. It makes me human. If you’re a medical parent reading this, take this as your sign to get started. Whether it’s a switch-adapted toyS, researching proximity switches, or pursuing an AAC device, commit to taking that first step. Our children deserve autonomy and self-determination. And for that, they need to communicate.

Black History Month reminds us that every AAC user deserves to see their voice, their language, and their culture honored. Black English is a language. Black identify is powerful. Representation matters. Featured here is TouchChat WordPower using Symbolstix. When I set up this students device, I chose to use Malik as his voice, adjusted the pitch, changed the skin color to dark brown, and made sure his name was pronounced properly. I checked the intonation pattern, and considered the option for some cultural phrases. Always consult with your students family before adding phrases or discussing code switching since these are usually personal family decisions. Have questions or comments? Lately I’ve seen so many great conversations about AAC use in the autistic community, and these conversations are so important. At the same time, we’re inadvertently leaving out AAC users in this space and conversations. As someone who works with medically complex children and adults, I want them to be included in more conversations. I want to honor their AAC use that allows them to connect to this world and space. What would you like to see more conversations about in this AAC space?
