Why some ADHD brains seem to thrive on chaos

Ever noticed how a child with ADHD can’t get started on homework until it’s nearly bedtime — yet suddenly powers through when there’s no time left?
Or how they seem energised by pressure, excitement, or even arguments?

That’s not just personality — it’s brain chemistry.

When dopamine levels are low, the ADHD brain often turns to adrenaline for stimulation.
Adrenaline kicks in during urgency, conflict, or high emotion — creating a temporary sense of focus and energy.

It’s why some children seek intensity or seem drawn to risk, fast-paced activities, or last-minute panic. Their brain is searching for the spark that helps them feel switched on.

But living in that constant adrenaline loop can be exhausting. It can lead to emotional outbursts, restlessness, and a nervous system stuck in “go mode.”

When we understand the role of adrenaline, we stop seeing chaos — and start seeing a brain searching for balance.
Meeting that need with safe stimulation helps a child find calm without needing crisis.
