NEW YORK STATE UPDATE

CALL TO ACTION: Unfortunately, the Brain Injury Association of New York State was not included in Governor Hochul’s FY 2026–2027 Executive Budget released last week. As joint budget hearings now begin, there is still opportunity to secure legislative support, particularly for our Concussion Outreach Prevention Education (COPE) program. Please support our efforts and email Senator Gustavo Rivera, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, the following message:

Senator Rivera,

I am writing today to urge you to support a funding request of $175,000 for Concussion Outreach Prevention Education (COPE) in the FY 26-27 budget. COPE partners the Brain Injury Association of New York State and the New York State Athletic Trainers' Association to provide concussion education across the state. COPE is dedicated to recognizing, preventing, and managing concussions, ensuring athletes stay safe, learn, and fully participate in school, sports, and life. By identifying concussion signs early and minimizing their impact, COPE helps young athletes succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in their communities.

Thanks to funding over the last two years, COPE has been a proven success with 43 presentations with 1,513 attendees. We’re asking for continued funding to protect more athletes and strengthen their futures.

Thank you for your time.
