๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฐ has been so exhilarating AND so challenging: a whirlwind of increased business, new adventures and responsibilities, and fantastic educational opportunities as I pursued more knowledge to further make an impact on the health and performance of the horses I'm privileged to call clients. It also came with losses of beloved horses, the most heat intense and smoke filled summer EVER, and ended in a personal struggle trying to balance an injury and ongoing rehab on my foot while working, and the pull of sudden family needs that took more attention than I had hours in the day. I tend to get pretty stoic when things "go south" and don't like to admit when I'm in the weeds. I was definitely in the thick of it and still have apologies to make from where I dropped the ball administratively. (Can I just say the struggle is real for a sole proprietor?) I have so appreciated everyone's understanding and support as I sorted through the tough stuff. Let's be clear though, I LOVE my work and am so passionate about helping your horse be the best version of themselves for whatever goals you have in mind. Improving how they feel, move, perform, age and meet the requests asked of them is my jam, my passion and what I continue to obsess about. I took advantage of the holiday break to assess business strengths and weaknesses and am excited to move forward in 2025 with improvements while continuing to offer best practice, hands-on bodywork modalities for your horses. Let's GOOOOO!!

What a pleasure to be partnering with Idaho Youth Ranch to provide holistic comfort and bodywork to the many horses that provide equine-assisted therapy and emotional recovery to our community's at-risk youth, adults and families. Horses are incredibly intuitive beings and their graciousness and sensitivity make them invaluable partners for this work. Did you know a horse can hear your heartbeat from 4 feet away? And like many therapists, these horses need their own form of emotional grounding and physical release, which is why I am honored to be a part of their wellness plan.

Long toes only affect the navicular right?

The leg has a series of joints. The metacarpo-phalangeal joint (fetlock), the proximal interphalangeal joint and distal interphalangeal joint (Pastern and coffin). Each one of these joints is a centre of rotation and because of how the digit is not underneath the limb, but in front off, each of these joints is profoundly affected by the distance from its centre of rotation to the point at which the ground acts through the hoof. In the form of the turning force (moment).
An increased turning force must be counteracted by whatever keeps those joints from descending under the load, the tendons AND ligaments.

Hence why long toes affect ALL of the soft tissue structures on the back of the leg. Both tendons and the suspensory!

If you would like this information clarified, explained in simpler terms and would like an introductory lesson in equine digit biomechanics then join myself and The study of the equine hoof on the 3rd Oct at 7pm BST where I will be doing just that.

Remember when your parents used to tell you to wait 30 minutes after eating before going for a swim? Unlike us, horses can actually benefit from eating forage before they exercise, as it may help reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.

While a variety of things can contribute to the development of stomach ulcers (medications, diet, stress, etc.), one train of thought is that these areas of irritation result as a consequence of the acid of the stomach splashing against unprotected parts of the stomach lining. When a horse eats forage, the hay can help absorb some of that acid and thus reduce the risk of ulcer formation.

It is important to note that a forage meal (one comprised of hay or grass) provides the most benefit, while eating large volumes of concentrate feeds (such as oats, corn, or other cereal grains) can actually increase the amount of acid within the stomach.

As always, please be sure to consult with your vet regarding further diagnostics and treatments if you have concerns that your horse may have gastric ulcers.
