Last fall, 81-year-old Betty Prough was traveling the country with her husband, Russell, from their home in Kentucky to visit friends and family. During their stop in Twin Falls, Prough fainted and experienced her first-ever broken bone in her right ankle.
Her injury led to an unplanned detour to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Hospital, where she spent three weeks receiving care from the surgical team and Inpatient Rehab Unit.
Prough was so touched by the outstanding care she received that she sent a letter of gratitude (and even wrote a poem) to the Magic Valley staff. She shared how the staff listened to her with compassion and understanding, even when she was disoriented after surgery.
Following surgery, Prough explained how the team prioritized her healing so she and her husband could return home to Louisville, Kentucky. She spent the next two weeks in the Magic Valley inpatient rehabilitation unit to recover.
“Every aspect of this time was spent being supported and educated by the staff," Prough said. "There was nursing care, physical and occupational therapy of course, but woven throughout I experienced being listened to and cared for emotionally.
“Everything about (the) facility showed genuine (care) for me and for all the patients … Because (the staff) honored my questions and treated them as worthwhile, I was empowered to not only listen, but also to feel confident in my progress toward my goals.
“At first when I entered the ER of St. Luke’s Magic Valley, my biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be able to do what I needed; by the time I left on Oct. 17, I smiled with confidence and pride because of the care I received and the friendships I still treasure.”
