St. Luke's Boise makes Becker’s 100 Great Hospitals in America list.

Becker’s Hospital Review recently released its 2025 “Great Hospitals in America” list, and among the list of 100 health care organizations stands St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

According to Becker’s, hospitals on the list “are recognized for delivering excellent clinical care, prioritizing patient safety and driving innovation through research, education and continuous improvement.”

Hospitals were chosen for the list based on analyses of the hospital’s recent achievements, including U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek rankings, Healthgrades awards, CMS star ratings and safety grades from The Leapfrog Group. Becker's also accepted nominations.

“This recognition is an incredible testament to the work and dedication of our clinical and support teams, along with leadership,” said Marle Hoff, chief nursing officer for St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

“We bring our best each day with a focus on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to serve the health needs of our community. Earning a place on this list of 100 hospitals throughout the U.S. is something to be celebrated.”

After an amazing 25-year career as an Idaho pulmonary, critical care and sleep physician, Dr. Brian Goltry retired Jan. 2.

As one of the original members of his group at St. Luke’s Clinic – Idaho Pulmonary Associates: Meridian, he had a major hand in building and curating a culture that is tight-knit and supportive.

As a testament to that, it was no surprise that 14 of his clinical colleagues showed up on his last day just to thank and congratulate him on a job well done.

“Humble, funny and always down-to-Earth in his communication, Brian has always put his patients and their needs first,” said St. Luke’s Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Dr. Jim Souza.

“[He] has made an amazing and positive impact on the people of our great state. Thank you for the amazing gift of talent, personality and dedication you gave to our group and to the people of Idaho.”

Every semester, Ryan McIlvain’s second-grade class at Meadows Valley Elementary takes on a community project. This semester, the students organized a coloring supply drive for children receiving care at St. Luke's McCall.

McIlvain shared that when the class was discussing ideas for this semester’s project, the students thought of classmates who had been in the hospital and wanted to provide something to make kids feel better, like toys or coloring books.

Karl Linzmeyer, St. Luke’s McCall nursing and patient care manager and interim associate chief nursing officer, Tiffany Dobbs, community health manager, and Laura Crawford, PR and communications business partner, met with the students to pick up the donations. The class collected a large box filled with coloring books, crayons, markers and colored pencils.

“We’re so grateful the students thought of other kids and wanted to provide comfort to them when they aren’t feeling well or have suffered an injury,” Linzmeyer said.

The coloring supplies will be distributed to children receiving care at the hospital and urgent care clinic.

Meet Allyse Mann, RN Telemetry, St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center:

“I came to St. Luke’s straight out of nursing school and have been working on telemetry for 2.5 years now as floor nurse, code recorder, and as a charge nurse. Along the way, I fell in love with cardiac nursing and have been able to attain my CVRN certification with the help of the St. Luke’s team! My time here has challenged and grown me in so many ways, and I have been able to learn the value of teamwork and culture. One of the things I love so much about St. Luke’s is the way they encourage you to take pride and hold power in your practice. I’ve had the opportunity to become involved in the nursing shared governance and see how much ability we have to better our practice and provide quality care to patients while also prioritizing staff needs. I have served as the chair of my unit based council, the chair of the Boise site collaborative council, and sit as a member on the system collaborative council. It is so fulfilling to see ideas come from nurses in direct patient care to create changes in their units, in their hospitals, and across the system. St. Luke’s provides so many opportunities to empower you to create positive change in your environment. The chance to grow beyond bedside nursing and to become more educated, to grow as a leader, and to be an invested team member have made my time here immensely valuable. I would encourage any nurse to invest in these opportunities!”

Teresa Cash, a patient access specialist at St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, was presented with a Sunshine Award on Dec. 30. While Cash does not work in a clinical role, she was nominated by a patient for her tremendous display of compassion, truly living up to St. Luke’s ICARE values.

A patient who has been going to St. Luke’s Cancer Institute for the last 28 months came in for a consultation with his radiologist.

The patient was waiting for an important prescription but was too physically weak to walk over to the pharmacy himself. He had been placed on a 24/7 portable oxygen unit recently and was exhausted between the drive to the appointment and his doctor's visit.

Cash went above and beyond to go to the pharmacy on the patient’s behalf and was able to relay the message that the prescription had been backordered.

She proceeded to make phone calls to find a solution to his backordered medication and even helped refill the patient’s portable oxygen unit that had run out while the patient was waiting.

Cash was able to find a small supply of the patient’s medication and immediately had it delivered to the pharmacy. The prescription was critical as the patient needed it before starting a new chemotherapy medication.

“(Cash) then asked if I needed assistance (to my car), which I replied, ‘Yes, please.’ I was very weak from such a long morning and afternoon. She pushed me to my truck and I thanked her for being so attentive to me and taking care of my problem!”

In December, RN Michael Bessette was presented with a DAISY Award during a shift change. Both his dayshift and nightshift colleagues, as well as his leadership team, were present to celebrate Bessette’s recognition.

The following nomination comes from a patient’s family who appreciated Bessette’s expertise and kindness when handling their family member’s end of life care.

“Mike really went above and beyond when caring for my dad. Not only did he treat him with great dignity, care and compassion, he (also) stayed on shift an extra four hours and rearranged his schedule so he could continue to provide additional care.

"He would check on my dad and our family frequently and treated my dad as a special patient rather than just ‘another patient.’ When the time came that my dad was no longer responsive, Mike would still visit him and speak so tenderly, apologizing for the ‘stick’ of a necessary injection.

"While the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for, we appreciate all his efforts to serve (my dad) in such a caring and compassionate way!”

Caitlyn Wood and Lanita Adams from the Boise Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit were both honored with DAISY awards on Dec. 9. Both nominations came from the same nominator, a patient who recovered at St. Luke’s Inpatient Rehabilitation after a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. The patient nominated each of the nurses for their outstanding kindness, compassion and care, both embodying the very best of nursing excellence.

“Lanita was my calm and decisive advocate … She immediately performed a thorough assessment (and) made a critical judgment call and promptly consulted with the doctor to advocate for further intervention. (Amid) orchestrating my urgent transfer to the ER, she personally called my wife to explain the situation in a clear and compassionate manner, ensuring (she) was informed and prepared.

"Thankfully, the tests concluded that I was not having a stroke … Had it been a stroke, Lanita’s rapid response would have been crucial to securing treatment within the vital golden hour, dramatically improving my potential for recovery and long-term prognosis … Lanita exemplifies the vigilant, knowledgeable and compassionate nurse that every patient hopes for and deserves.”

“With a bright, cheery and kind disposition, Caitlyn took the time to sit with me and my wife to explain what to expect during my stay. She clearly outlined the differences between the rehab hospital and the main hospital … empowering me with knowledge. Even on days when I was not officially her patient, she would often pop her head into my room just to check on me.

"She took time out of her undoubtedly busy schedule to visit, offered words of encouragement and shared a moment of genuine human connection … Caitlyn is more than a skilled nurse; she is a phenomenal caregiver whose empathy and dedication has a lasting impact.”
