Right and Left-Handedness

As early as ten weeks gestation, it is possible to determine whether the unborn child is left-handed or right-handed by studying ultrasounds. About 85% of embryos prefer their right hand over their left hand. About 85% of adults prefer their right hand, too, and the majority of fetuses do not change their handedness between the womb and age 10.

Furthermore, by 14 weeks, the fetus makes goal-directed movements towards the uterine wall as well as his eyes and mouth. These intentional movements from fetuses as early as 14 weeks demonstrate the fetus is conscious and aware of his environment. If he has a twin, he will gently reach out to touch his sibling as well.

Week 13
Complex facial features and behaviors

The fetus practices breathing in the womb. Usually, she waits 2 to 3 seconds between breaths.

The fetus starts producing enkephalins, neurotransmitters specific to the transmission of pain.

Antibodies from the mother may pass to the fetus.

The fetal heart pumps about 6 quarts of blood per day.

This week, the lips and nose have matured into their adult shape. Now the preborn child has complex facial features. Furthermore, the vocal cords start developing. Later in the pregnancy researchers will even see the vocal cords vibrate as the fetus practices crying in the womb.

When can antibodies pass from the mother to the fetus?
During the pregnancy, maternal antibodies can transfer to the developing fetus. The earliest evidence of antibodies entering the fetal blood is from a study of fetuses as young as 13 weeks gestation. The number of antibodies in the fetus’ bloodstream rises continuously from 17 weeks until birth, with the sharpest increases in the last month of pregnancy. At birth, the baby usually has a higher concentration of antibodies than the mother to keep the baby from catching dangerous diseases.10

Why Is an Ultrasound Important?
If you’ve had a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is the next step to gather important details about your pregnancy and overall health. It’s common to have at least two during pregnancy, but your doctor may ask for more if they feel it’s needed.

An ultrasound can help determine the following:

How far along you are, or your gestational age, can impact your options.

If the pregnancy is developing, since about 26% of pregnancies naturally end in miscarriage, an ultrasound can check for signs of viability.

If the pregnancy is inside the uterus because in rare cases, a pregnancy can develop outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy), which is a medical emergency requiring immediate care.

There are two types of ultrasounds:

Transva**nal ultrasound: Often used in early pregnancy, this method involves inserting a small transducer into the va**na for a clearer image.

Abdominal ultrasound: This method, used later in pregnancy, involves moving the transducer over the belly to capture images externally.

Week 14
Goal-oriented hand movements

The preborn child makes goal-oriented hand movements.

Mature tastebuds start to cover the tongue and connect with cranial nerves.

The fetus produces a variety of hormones.

In week 14, the fetus grows rapidly and increases his body weight by over 50%.
The fetus’s body finally starts growing faster than his head,5 and his arms become more proportional with the rest of his body.6 Starting in the next few weeks, babies start growing at different paces, with some faster than others. Nevertheless, they all follow the same developmental path.
