Week 13
Complex facial features and behaviors

Highlights
The fetus practices breathing in the womb. Usually, she waits 2 to 3 seconds between breaths.

The fetus starts producing enkephalins, neurotransmitters specific to the transmission of pain.

Antibodies from the mother may pass to the fetus.

The fetal heart pumps about 6 quarts of blood per day.

This week, the lips and nose have matured into their adult shape. Now the preborn child has complex facial features. Furthermore, the vocal cords start developing. Later in the pregnancy researchers will even see the vocal cords vibrate as the fetus practices crying in the womb.

Male vs. Female Development

A person’s s*x is determined at conception.
Males have a set of XY chromosomes and females have a set of XX chromosomes. These s*x chromosomes determine whether the embryo develops as a male or female. Initially the go**ds in both male and female embryos can develop as either te**es or ovaries. Starting at 8 weeks gestation, an embryo with a Y-chromosome produces a factor known as SRY that simultaneously causes the go**ds to begin maturing as te**es and prevents them from maturing as ovaries. The te**es, in turn, produce two important hormones: testosterone and anti-Mullerian Hormone, or AMH. In males, the te**es starts producing and releasing testosterone by 10 weeks. Testosterone allows the primitive male anatomy to mature, while AMH causes the primitive female structures to shrivel. The male internal ducts consist of a pair of tubes called the mesonephric ducts that will mature into the vas deferens and epididymis. The epididymis stores s***m, and the vas deferens is the s***m duct.

Honoring Our Faithful Pastors
In celebration of Pastor Appreciation Month, we’re recognizing a few of our top church partners—pastors who consistently go above and beyond to support our mission and the families we serve.

We’re deeply grateful for their leadership, prayers, and steadfast commitment to sharing truth with compassion.

A special thank you to Caffeina Roasting Company on State Street for generously donating mugs and gift cards to help us bless these incredible pastors.

💬 Take a moment today to thank your pastor—for their sacrifice, wisdom, and the grace they bring to your life and community.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Event Sponsors, Table Sponsors, Individual Donors, and the success of the Silent Auction and Wine Pull, we raised $55,000. These funds will directly support vital programs and services for women and families in Idaho facing unplanned pregnancies.

Week 12
Growth spurt, nails, and fingerprints
The fetus’s heart has beat over 10 million times already!

All of the intestines, which grew so fast that they extended outside the embryo, just under the umbilical cord, are back in the abdomen.

The fetus’s body weight increases by over 75%.

In gestational week 12, the preborn child’s fingernails start to grow. Just like an adult’s, the fetus’s nails grow out slowly from the nail bed. The fingernails won’t reach the fingertips until approximately 32 weeks. The toenails start growing at 16 weeks and finish growing by 36 weeks.

What can a 12 week old fetus do?
By 12 weeks, the fetus responds to light touch on the face, palms of the hand and soles of the feet. A light touch on the sole of the foot may cause the fetus to bend his knee and curl his toes. The fetus continues with complex behaviors, such as thumb-sucking, swallowing, and stretching.

The first recorded eye movements come from week 12. When something touches the upper eyelid, the eyes roll downward and the muscles around the eye ‘squint’. Furthermore, if researchers touch the palm of the fetus’s hand at this age, she curls her fingers in towards the object, but not her thumb. The fetus does not include her thumb in grasping an object until about 15 weeks.
