Testing Services
Body Composition:
The measurement of body composition is the calculation of the portion of the fat and lean tissue components of the body. It is used to determine body fat percentage and then calculate a recommended body weight. The lab is equipped to do three different kinds of body composition testing: hydrostatic (under water) weighing, Bod Pod and skin fold calipers. Metabolic Testing:
Resting Metabolic Rate: Resting metabolic rate is the energy required by the body to maintain the vital functions of the body in a resting state. This value allows you to calculate total daily energy expenditure, approximate the energy substrates being used, and to estimate caloric intake needs. This is a test conducted to determine the maximal amount of oxygen the body is able to consume per minute of physical activity. This measurement is used to determine cardiovascular fitness level and can somewhat predict aerobic performance. The lab is equipped to do maximal testing on a variety of different ergometers (bicycles, rowing) and on the treadmill. Lactate/Anaerobic/Ventilatory threshold: This is a test to determine the exercise intensity at which the body’s ability to clear lactate is exceeded by lactate production. This measurement is used to more accurately prescribe optimum training intensities for aerobic events such as cycling and distance running. Anaerobic power test: The Wingate Anaerobic Power Test is used to assess peak anaerobic power, anaerobic fatigue and total anaerobic capacity. These values can be used to more accurately prescribe optimum training intensities for aerobic events such as cycling and distance running and for anaerobic events, i.e. Sub-maximal testing: Sub-maximal exercise tests are conducted to estimate maximal values and workloads. Sub-max testing is not as intense as maximal and does not require as much equipment or physical exertion. Tests include stair stepping, cycle ergometery, and treadmill protocols. Other Testing:
Pulmonary Function Testing: Pulmonary function testing is done to determine lung function values such as total lung volume, vital capacity and fractional capacities. These volumes and components of lung function and are important determinants of pulmonary health. Exercise Stress Test: An exercise stress test is a maximal effort test that is conducted while connected to an electrocardiogram (ECG). The ECG records the electrical activity of the heart. This test is conducted to monitor the heart while under the stress of exercise and can be diagnostic for various cardiovascular diseases. Your physician must be present to diagnose and read the ECG. Isometric Strength: Isometric strength is the maximal force that a muscle group can exert in a fixed position. It can be performed to determine strength and muscular balance. Optimum strength and antagonistic muscle balance reduce the risk of injury and enhance performance. Isometric strength tests include: abdominal, chest press, low back, shoulder press, and upper back, as well as others. Flexibility Testing: Flexibility is an important measure of an individual’s ability to move through the range of motion without causing injury. Optimum flexibility can reduce the risk of injury and enhance performance. Flexibility tests include: low back and hamstring, trunk rotation, and shoulder as well as others. Other tests and protocols can be utilized and/or developed to meet your specific needs and interests. send us a message!

Today we celebrate our very own graduate Austin Lee!
Austin is our stellar student lab technician here in the HPL who graduates today with his BS in Kinesiology!

To help you all get to know Austin a bit better, we caught up with him before he officially completes his degree.

What’s your favorite memory work in the lab?: - When families will come in and I can give kiddos tours of the HPL and let them look at all the equipment we have in there that they probably haven’t seen yet. I open up the BodPod and let them go in and scream as loud as they can and they really enjoy it.

One highlight as an undergrad?: The blessing and opportunity to study abroad in Torino, Italy for a semester is something I will always cherish. The experiences, places I visited, and people I met is something I will never forget and will forever be grateful for.

Future goals: After graduation, I will continue working in the HPL and get my ACSM-EP certification and continue to build my skills and experience. Once my time in the lab comes to an end, I will be pursuing a career in the Pharmaceutical Sales industry.

Congratulations Austin once again! Thanks for being such a great member of our team!

Earlier this summer here at the HPL we had the pleasure of working with , a professional ice hockey player who came to our lab looking to collect some baseline fitness data as she transitions into the off season training block.

Malia can be seen here crushing the Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT), a common lab assessment test designed to measure anaerobic power and capacity through short maximal cycling efforts. The test is designed to push the anaerobic energy systems (ATP-CP and glycolytic pathways) to their limits in order to better understand an athlete’s ability to produce lower body power.

The Wingate Anaerobic Test provides several key metrics:
Peak Power Output (PPO): The highest mechanical power generated during any 5-second interval. (higher peak power = explosive on-ice movement)
Fatigue Index (Rate of Fatigue): The percentage decline in power output from peak to minimum during the test. (Lower fatigue index = greater ability to sustain power output)
Relative Peak Power Output: Peak power normalized to body weight. (allows for comparisons between individuals of different sizes and comparisons to normative data for athletes)

By understanding these power metrics, we help athletes like Malia tailor their training to maximize performance and hit their off-season goals with precision.

Want to test your power potential? Book a Wingate test with us at the Boise State Human Performance Lab today. (Link in our Bio)

Get to know the members of our lab!

Starting with Dr. Blake Densley! Dr. Densley is the director of the Human Performance Lab. He took on the role because he enjoys bridging the gap between theory and action with students, subjects, and the community. He enjoys running, mountain biking, and lifting weights in his free time.

Dr. Densley is also the most recent recipient of the Golden Apple Award for the College of Health sciences!!! This award honors faculty for their excellence in teaching.

This week was “fun day” for lab…if you consider an all out VO2 max effort fun…. We do get useful information tho! Did you know that you can use your VO2 to estimate your genetic ability for a 5k, 10k, or marathon? Google VDOT charts and check it out!

11/09/2021

It’s lactate threshold (LT) week! completed a Vo2 max test while measuring ventilatory threshold (VT). VT and LT should occur around the same point, we’ll be measuring that this week.

10/28/2021

This week we are measuring ventilatory threshold, the point at which breathing rate rapidly increases from exercise. This typically occurs near the lactic threshold so it can be a useful metric for developing training intensities.

10/26/2021

.spiritedrunner came in for a lactic threshold test. This test allows us to develop individualized training zones and measure fitness. And yes, he is pretty fit right now.
