After more than 26 years of dedicated service, Dr. Henry Thompson will retire as service line medical director for St. Luke’s Children’s on Dec. 8. A celebration in his honor was held Nov. 10, and on Nov. 24, he saw his final clinic patients, closing a chapter that began in June 1999 when he became Idaho’s first pediatric gastroenterologist.

Dr. Thompson’s impact on pediatric care in the region is immeasurable. He built a specialty service line from the ground up, cared for thousands of families, and mentored countless clinicians. His leadership shaped what pediatric specialty care looks like today, fostering programs such as the Trach/Vent clinic and serving as pediatric co-director of cystic fibrosis for 23 years. His commitment to children and families has influenced the very heart of St. Luke’s mission.

As system medical director, Dr. Thompson led a team of more than 100 physicians and advanced practice providers, championing collaboration and implementing best practices that elevated care for the youngest patients.

“Henry’s legacy is one of profound impact, not only on the lives of the patients and families we serve, but also on his peers, staff and the broader medical community,” said Katie Schimmelpfennig, Children’s service line administrator. “We are committed to carrying forward the values and standards that have been the hallmark of his tenure.”

Colleagues describe Dr. Thompson as empathetic, approachable, and deeply committed to listening. “His genuine care and kindness have earned him the trust and admiration of both patients and staff,” said Dr. Vic Kadyan, St. Luke’s Clinic president. “His compassionate approach and tireless efforts have touched countless lives.”

As Dr. Thompson steps into retirement, his influence will endure in the patients he helped heal, the families he supported, and the team he inspired with his humor, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. St. Luke’s extends heartfelt gratitude and warm wishes for this next chapter.

An ‘out of this world’ experience with Children’s Cancer Institute.

Halloween 2025 may be in the books, but for some patients of St. Luke's Children's Cancer Institute, who got a trip to the stars, it made for an extra special memory.

This year's theme focused on outer space, and patients had a chance to see and learn about the stars in the mobile STARLAB, provided by The College of Idaho's Whittenberger Planetarium.

Even Panther, the Children's Cancer Institute Facility Dog, sat under the stars to learn, and later posed for pictures and exchanged high fives with kids.

Bubbles, music, cheers and smiles surrounded 3-year-old Miles, his two siblings and parents as they recently departed St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital after more than 68 days of care and recovery.

When Miles experienced an accidental fall from a window in his home this summer, his family’s world was turned upside down.

First responders rushed him to the care of St. Luke’s Children’s emergency trauma team. His injuries were significant, but little Miles proved he was ready to fight. With his family’s support and that of pediatric care specialists at St. Luke's Children’s Hospital and the pediatric inpatient rehabilitation care unit, Miles regained his ability to walk and has begun talking again.

Around 50 St. Luke’s Children’s team members and Treasure Valley first responders – many who helped the day Miles was injured – lined the hospital hallways recently to celebrate his graduation from the pediatric IRU. Hugs and words of gratitude were exchanged, and the special send-off continued, with first responders escorting the family’s car home.

September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which St. Luke’s Children’s Cancer Institute celebrates annually with various activities and costume days. This year was no different, as the team hosted:

• Chalk the walk: An annual event to bring awareness to childhood cancers and to promote positive, uplifting messages for all St. Luke's patients and staff.

• Panther’s “Barkday” party: One of St. Luke’s therapy dogs, Panther, celebrated his fourth birthday last month. He loved receiving gifts and snuggles from patients and giving every patient a goodie bag to celebrate his special day.

• Cancer crew at work: Clinic staff dresses up as a fun way to engage with patients.

• International Dot Day: A global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration on Sept. 15. Patients, their families, and staff work together to create dots to "make your mark" in celebration of “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds and even wear polka dots!

Clinical Dietitian Stormi Niemann recently received a Sunshine Award for providing outstanding patient care. Her nomination came from a thankful mother on behalf of her daughter. Niemann has had the privilege of working with the daughter since her discharge from the NICU in 2024. Below is an excerpt from the nomination:

“From the moment we were discharged, Stormi has treated (my daughter) not just as a patient, but as someone she genuinely cares about. Every visit, phone call, and conversation with Stormi has left me feeling heard, supported, and validated in my concerns as a parent.

“One example I will never forget occurred around Christmas. (My daughter) had gotten quite sick and was refusing to eat. My husband and I tried everything we had learned in the NICU, but nothing was working.

"I reached out to (her) care team, but with the holiday approaching, many were out of the office. I felt lost, scared, and worried that we might end up back in the hospital. Then, completely unexpectedly, I received a late-night phone call from Stormi — just two days before Christmas.

“She talked through the situation with me, helped problem-solve, and came up with a plan that ultimately helped (my daughter) begin eating again. That call meant the world to me. On a week when most people are with their families, Stormi went out of her way to make sure we weren’t alone — and that (she) got the care she needed.

“(Stormi) is incredibly perceptive, compassionate, and thorough. She collaborates with us as partners in (my daughter's) care and always takes the time to listen, understand, and guide us through each challenge with empathy and expertise. Her dedication goes beyond her job description — she makes a real difference in the lives of the families she supports.”

Last month, St. Luke’s hosted its annual NICU Graduate Picnic at Municipal Park in Boise, an event that creates spaces for NICU graduates and their families to connect with one another and reflect on shared experiences from their time spent in the unit at St. Luke's.

The NICU has hosted this picnic for more than 25 years. After cancelling the picnic from 2020-23 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returned in 2024 and welcomed more than 250 attendees at this year’s event.

While the annual picnic allows NICU graduates and their families to celebrate, the St. Luke’s NICU staff finds it just as rewarding.

“This event gives us something rare and precious: a glimpse of the long-term impact of our work. It’s not just about the care we gave in those fragile early moments—it’s about the lives we helped shape,” said Vicki Wohlers, a clinical educator. “Families come to show off their little miracles and celebrate how far they’ve come. They’re always scanning the crowd for that nurse or provider who made a difference. And when they find you, the gratitude is overwhelming.”

One of the families in attendance was the Estvold family, who spent time in the St. Luke’s NICU in 2020 with the birth of their triplets, Penny, Ollie and Finny. They were able to hug and personally thank at least a few members of the outsized team that cared for their then-newborn triplets at this year’s NICU graduate picnic, including Dr. Jennifer Merchant.

“Having spontaneous triplets during the height of COVID was a terrifying proposition,” said Travis Estvold, father of the triplets. “Literally everyone at the hospital and NICU – doctors, nurses, volunteers, front desk staff – was so kind and helpful.

"Our newborns were well cared for, but just as importantly, these frightened and ill-equipped first-time parents received copious education on how to feed, change, bathe, and generally care for the undersized new additions to our family. We are eternally grateful to St. Luke’s NICU.”
