Another key aspect of self-care is reducing stress.

How we perceive and respond to an event is a significant factor in how we adjust and cope with it. The stress you feel is not only the result of your caregiving situation but also the result of your perception of it—whether you see the glass as half-full or half-empty.

To manage your stress, you must first recognize it. Once you identify your source of stress, determine if it is something within your control. When you try to change things over which you have no control, you will only increase your sense of frustration. Find a stress-relieving activity that works for you.

This can be repeating a simple mantra, taking several deep breaths, or going for a walk. No matter what you do to reduce stress- do it often.

Fear and frustration are also common emotions experienced by caregivers.

What if something happens? Will I be able to cope? Will I feel guilty? Am I responsible for things that go wrong?

Does this sound familiar?

Frustration arises from feeling like you can’t do anything right or that things just don’t go as planned no matter what you do or how hard you try.

To cope with these emotions, acknowledge them. Allow yourself to feel them, then try making a contingency plan.

When it comes to practicing self-care, there are a number of barriers that can prevent us from addressing our own needs.

Do any of the following sound familiar:

-Do you think you are being selfish if you put your needs first?

-Is it frightening to think of your own needs? What is the fear about?

-Do you have trouble asking for what you need? Do you feel inadequate if you ask for help?

-Do you feel you have to prove that you are worthy of the care recipient's affection? Do you do too much as a result?

Identify your barriers to self-care and start working on ways to knock them down.
