5 Different Kinds of Headaches…and How to Help Them

When it comes to managing headaches, you have other options than just popping pain pills. But first, it's important to figure out what type of headache you're suffering from.

- Rebound headaches. Have you ever reached for aspirin or ibuprofen to treat a headache, only to have the headache return once the pain killer wears off? You may be dealing with a rebound headache, which can be caused by medication overuse.

- Sinus headaches. These types of headaches occur when you're dealing with a sinus infection or sinus inflammation. A sinus headache may be accompanied by other symptoms like fever, stuffy or runny nose with green discharge, and facial pressure.

- Migraine headaches. These types of headaches are typically intense and can last for up to three days at a time. Migraines may be one-sided and be so severe that they interfere with your daily activities, bringing associated symptoms like vomiting, light sensitivity and sound sensitivity. Triggers like poor sleep or diet and hormonal changes may cause them to occur.

- Caffeine headaches. While you might love coffee, it can leave you feeling worse for wear when the caffeine leaves your system. Caffeine withdrawal is real, and when it happens to you, headache is a common symptom. Caffeine withdrawal headaches typically happen for people who drink a lot of caffeine, as in more than five cups of coffee each day.

- Tension headaches. These kinds of headaches are the most common type of headache experienced today, and typically feel like a constant ache in the head. Some people describe it as a pressure in the neck or back of the head. Unlike migraines, they typically do not have nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches may be caused by stress response and chemical changes in the brain.

Why Does My Back Hurt? 💥
Whether you're dealing with chronic or acute back pain, one thing is certain-continuing to take pain medication to get through your day isn't a long-term solution.

At Ogata Chiro, we dive deep to uncover the root cause of your problem while developing a care plan that serves you and your unique needs.

If you're not sure what's causing your back pain, here are a few common culprits we see often.

1. Bad posture. Keeping your spine properly positioned all day is hard work. For most of us, slouching happens when we use our phones, computers or even watch television. When we fall out of proper posture, the muscles in your back can start to hurt.

2. Scoliosis. Our spine has a natural curve-but some people have an additional curvature that can cause problems. Scoliosis can be mild, moderate, or severe.

3. Your mattress. How long have you been sleeping on your current mattress? If it's been longer than 7 years, your mattress has likely lost its support and it may be time to purchase a new one.

4. Old injuries. Have you ever been in a car accident? Or played sports? Injuries that are months, years and even decades old can cause problems present day. Why? It's possible that if the injury never had the chance to heal properly, your body overcompensated for the injury, resulting in problems today that are finally expressing themselves. Fortunately, identifying the root cause of the injury can often lead to success in care.

5. Stress. When you're stressed, your muscles tighten. If chronic stress is a part of your life, so are tight muscles around the clock. As you can imagine, tense muscles that last for weeks on end can easily cause pain in the body.

The Best Time of Day to Walk 👣
Getting outside and into the fresh air for a period of time every day is something we should all strive to do. There's just something refreshing about soaking up warm sunlight, a light breeze, and crisp, fresh air.

If you already walk daily, you're on the right path! But according to science, there's a specific time each day that provides the most benefit from walking.

It’s morning!

That's because our bodies rely on light for timekeeping. Getting light into our eyes and onto our skin within an hour of waking up each day helps to keep our circadian rhythms balanced and healthy. Upon waking each morning, your body's light sensitivity is extremely low, so getting outside for just ten minutes can give your brain the blast of brightness that it needs to get into the rhythm of your day.

In fact, how we spend the first hour after waking up can play a big role on how we'll sleep that night.

By getting morning light into our eyes, it helps our bodies slow the production of melatonin, which is a hormone that helps us fall asleep at night. If we wake up slowly, and, for example, stay in a dark bedroom for an hour after waking up, our melatonin levels can be thrown off.

That's why getting outside is so important. In addition to helping our bodies get moving, cortisol will also begin coursing through our veins, providing energy we need for the day.

So, the next time you wake up, make it a goal to get outside and walk for just ten minutes to let the sun wake you up naturally (without sunglasses unless you have a medical condition requiring them).

Let us know if you notice any differences the next time you visit our practice. We can't wait to hear about your experience!

Ice VS. Heat: What to Use and When ❄️🔥
Life is full of bumps and bruises. And if you've found yourself injured, there seems to be a lot of differing information online about whether or not you should be using heat or ice to help manage pain and reduce inflammation.

As your partner in health, we wanted to set the record straight.

Here are a few tips for choosing heat and ice when it comes to specific injuries.

Headaches: If you have a throbbing headache, instead of reaching for a pain reliever like ibuprofen, consider using a cool compress at the base of your skull and around your neck. If you're dealing with a tension headache, choose a warm compress around your neck to help relax tight muscles. Suffer from frequent headaches? Book a visit with us.

New Injuries (less than six weeks old): Ice is usually the winner when it comes to new injuries. That's because ice may help constrict blood vessels, which lowers pain and inflammation. Heat, on the other hand, may increase inflammation in new injuries.

Chronic Injuries (older than six weeks): Choose a heating pad for lingering injuries as the warmth may help promote circulation and relax tight muscles, which can relieve stiff joints and offer relief.

Strains or Sprains: Using both heat and ice can be beneficial. Immediately after a strain or sprain, choose ice to help reduce swelling and inflammation. When inflammation has gone down, use heat to help relieve muscle stiffness.

We're always here for you. If you're dealing with a new or chronic injury, consider booking a visit with our practice to find out if natural, gentle chiropractic adjustments could help. We'd love to welcome you into the practice! Find us online at www.ogatachiropractic.com

Why Are My Muscles Sore After I Work Out? 💪
Exercise is an important part of a healthy life. But can something so good for you be painful? For some people, yes. But don't worry—it's entirely normal to be sore after a new workout.

Delayed onset muscle soreness, also known as DOMS, can happen after a workout and cause sore muscles that may reduce your range of motion for up to two days. While you may be slightly uncomfortable, it's actually a positive sign that your muscles are working properly and getting used to your new activity or exercise.

DOMS occurs with resistance training and is a result of micro-tears in muscles, which leads to more blood flow and inflammation. This can bring light swelling that triggers your pain receptors.

However, this is only temporary. As your muscle recovers, it's able to eventually handle heavier and heavier loads, making you stronger.

Reducing Muscle Soreness
Even though sore muscles and working out go hand in hand, there are steps you can take to reduce your discomfort as your body recovers from a new workout.

Although you may not have guessed it, MORE exercise helps to relieve DOMS. However, make sure it's something gentle like light cardio or yoga a day or so after your DOMS inducing exercise.
Warm up your muscles for five minutes longer than you usually do before your next workout.
Stay hydrated! It's important to drink plenty of water on days you work out and days you don't.
Give each muscle group adequate time to recover. There's no need to work out your legs several days in a row. Instead, focus on legs one day, followed by shoulders, then core.

Want to give your body an even bigger boost for combating muscle soreness and performing optimally? Contact our practice at 208-938-3334 to book an appointment for a chiropractic adjustment. We look forward to seeing you soon.
