Wellness in Motion

Wellness in Motion Wellness In Motion is a Pilates and movement studio in Boise, Idaho. We specialize in back care, sc Jen is a graduate of Polestar Pilates.

Wellness In Motion LLC founder, Jen Gorman, is a scoliosis and spinal fusion patient, advocate, and teacher. She teaches Pilates, yoga, and strength training nationwide for people with scoliosis, spinal fusions, and other back care concerns. She is passionate about inspiring people to live healthier and happier lives! At the age of eleven, Jen’s ballet teacher noticed an asymmetry in her shoulders. Soon after a doctor diagnosed her with scoliosis and within a year she had spinal fusion surgery. Bone from her right iliac crest fused the thoracic vertebrae (T3-T10) and was secured by a Harington rod. Jen danced professionally in high school and then attended the University of Notre Dame. She became a Certified Public Accountant and then quickly returned to dancing professionally. Although these experiences differed significantly, her back was sensitive regardless of whether she sat all day or danced all day. She frequently experienced a certain level of discomfort and pain. Jen began practicing yoga to balance her body from the many hours of dancing. She discovered that yoga combined with other methods of cross training allowed her to manage and all together avoid pain. Eventually, she found her way into a yoga for scoliosis class and then a yoga for spinal fusions class in New York City. These classes brought to light an even deeper understanding of her body as well as the effects of scoliosis and spinal fusion surgery. Her certifications include the following:
⭐National Certified Pilates Teacher (NCPT)
⭐Pilates Adaptations for People with Scoliosis Supporting the Schroth Method Teachings with Hagit Berdishevsky and Lise Stoltz
⭐Yoga for Scoliosis Teacher Training Program with Elise Browning Miller
⭐NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer
⭐Functional Movement Screen Level 1 and 2
⭐Chicago Yoga Center Hatha Teacher Training

Jen continues to study weekly in Deborah Wolk’s Intermediate Yoga and Scoliosis class as well as in Hagit Berdishevsky’s Schroth + Pilates class. Jen is proud to be a member, teacher, and founding officer of the highly esteemed Samamkaya Back Care & Scoliosis Collective in New York City.

Hello Treasure Valley! Pilates can be a wonderful way to strengthen the core and stabilize the spine. Sometimes those of us with scoliosis find Pilates more effective when it's modified for our curves.

During this workshop I'll teach Pilates mat exercises while applying concepts of working with scoliosis. These scoliosis concepts include axial elongation, global expansion, opening of the areas of collapse, and trunk imbalance. I'll offer modification and/or variations specific to individual curve patterns. And I'll discuss how to choose exercises from the Pilates repertoire to best serve those of us with scoliosis and/or spinal fusions.

These workshops are intended for people (and their friends and family) with scoliosis and wellness practitioners who work with these clients. People with spinal fusions are always encouraged and welcome to join! Prior experience with Pilates or Schroth physical therapy is helpful but all levels may participate.

Art crush!!! This is what my favorite playwright said about writing a book that explores her experience with Bell's Palsy. The book is called Smile: The Story of a Face.

Sarah Ruhl is currently working on a new musical at American Repertory Theater called Wonder. The musical celebrates empathy, resilience, and the power of choosing kindness. Somehow as I was reading about this new piece I found an article about this book she wrote a few years ago.

This quote feels like she's speaking directly to me. Anyone else? 💚💚💚

If you've never read or seen Sarah's work, it's all the things - funny, magical, poetic, and relevant. DM me, and I'll share all my favorites!

I'm thrilled to return to for a two-part workshop on Saturday November 22nd.

Part 2 - Saturday afternoon’s workshop focuses on rest and relaxation to create a sense of calm.

Living with a back care condition can cause stress, physiological changes, and trigger our sympathetic nervous system into a flight or fight response. Jen will teach supported, modified yoga poses, various breathing techniques, and mindfulness.  The class will end with a yoga nidra guided meditation.

This workshop is intended for people (and their friends and family) with back care conditions such as scoliosis, hyperkyphosis, herniations, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and wellness practitioners who work with these clients.  People with spinal fusions are always welcome. Prior experience with Yoga and/or Pilates is helpful but all levels may participate.

3 CEs with Yoga Alliance for Registered Yoga Teachers.  Please notify Jen prior to the workshop if you’d like to submit for CEs.

It's the last day of October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  Have you gotten screened for breast cancer recently? It is important for those of us with scoliosis who received numerous X-rays as young people to stay up to date for breast cancer screening.

There are multiple research studies on scoliosis, x-rays, and breast cancer.  SOSORT has a consensus paper on the subject called “SOSORT 2012 Consensus Paper: Reducing X-ray Exposure in Pediatric Patients with Scoliosis.”  Though rates and study designs vary, research studies indicate an increased risk of breast cancer in females who had x-ray exposure in youth.  A high number of x-rays, an early age of exposure, and x-rays taken from the front (AP) increase the risk.

What to do if you’ve already had such exposure?

1. Know your risks. Talk with both sides of your family about your family health history.   Talk to your health care provider about your risk of breast cancer.
2. Get screened.  Talk with your health care provider if you’re at increased risk about what screening tools are best for you.  Tools include mammograms, clinical breast exams, and sometimes ultrasounds or MRIs.
3. Know what is normal for you.  See a doctor if you notice changes in your breast including size, shape, temperature sensation, color, texture, pain, and discharge.
4. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes nutrition, movement, sleep, limiting alcohol, and so much more.

What to do if you’re the parent of a young person diagnosed with scoliosis?

Be actively involved and advocate!  Thankfully, there is more awareness and also more options. The SOSORT paper has consensus statements for baseline x-rays, physician visits based on age of scoliosis detection, spinal x-rays based on age, and directions that x-rays are taken and when.  Also, keep in mind the following:

1. Measure the rotation using a Scoliometer to help determine when to get an x-ray.
2. Choose low dose x-ray imaging, such as EOS imaging, if it’s available in your area.
3. Surface topography can help reduce the need for x-rays by detecting changes that necessitate an x-ray.
4. MRIs may have a role in reducing the need for x-rays as well.

Vacations can be sssoooo fun and glamorous!!!
💚🇨🇦 Vancouver 🇨🇦💚

But let's keep it real. Travelling can also be hard. Bringing all the things to keep our bodies happy, finding the right spaces to do the things that keep our bodies happy, travelling on planes/cars/buses, and sleeping in different beds. I want to share ALL the colors.

There's a few things I don't go anywhere without. I pack a thin blanket (easily folded/rolled into lumbar support or other support) and blow up neck pillow for airplanes/cars/buses. And I cut a dowel to fit into my roller luggage so I can pack it along with an OPTP strap, yoga strap, versaloop, theraband, and door anchor.

Handstand, adho mukha vrksasana, is a pose I find so challenging because of the balance between stability, strength, and mobility. Here are a few handstands and handstand variations over the years in some of my favorite places.
