Since negative beliefs and self-sabotaging thoughts can do harm to our quality of life and physical health, we can utilize that process and flip it to our benefit—using our mind to heal the body. But the catch is that we have to be willing to dig into the toxic beliefs in order to grow. ⁣

A belief is a statement about reality that we believe to be absolutely true—but that doesn’t mean that it is. A belief may be holding us back from reaching our goals and feeling truly content and we may not even be conscious that we have it. ⁣

I’ve experienced how powerful it can be to recognize limiting beliefs and do the work to change them. I knew that I had traumatic experiences as a child that impacted me as an adult, but I had no idea how deeply they were affecting me. Working with a coach helped me identify the root of the belief (similar to the Functional Medicine approach to health) so that I could see the pattern and begin reframing what I know to be true. ⁣

My coach and good friend Shelly Lefkoe joined me on a past episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy to talk about this. You can listen to our conversation here: https://bit.ly/2Lx5ELV

Research shows that there is a powerful link between the amount of exercise we incorporate and our body’s immune system. We also know that aerobic exercise strengthens our cardiovascular health, and even slow and mindful practices like yoga and tai chi decrease blood pressure and cholesterol. ⁣

If you watched my Broken Brain docu-series, our experts discussed the critical role of exercise in preventing cognitive decline. Exercise strengthens our memory and makes us sharper, happier, and more resilient. Studies show that vigorous exercise is a better antidepressant than Prozac. ⁣

Exercise creates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is basically Miracle Grow for your brain. When you exercise, your brain becomes more elastic. Exercise also helps to improve your mood, boost your energy, and reduce overall stress in your body and mind.⁣

Daily movement also enhances detoxification by stimulating the colon and releasing toxins through your sweat. It boosts detoxification of environmental chemicals. Vigorous exercise will help you work up a sweat, but gentle exercise keeps your circulation going and flushes out all the toxic fluids that build up in your lymphatic system. Even just lying on your back and putting your legs straight up against the wall for 20 minutes can make a huge difference. ⁣

Clearly daily movement has whole body benefits. These are just a few of them. The question becomes, how do we incorporate movement daily? Here are three simple ways. ⁣

🗓 Make it a priority and think ahead. ⁣
⏰ Do it first thing in the morning. ⁣
🕺🏻Make it fun by trying something new. ⁣

Ever since I’ve made movement part of my life, I notice that I’m happier, calmer, stronger, and I just feel good. If you could put exercise into a pill, it would be a blockbuster drug. So I encourage you to get up today and move your body, even if it’s just for a few minutes.⁣

Your body sends signals when it’s not getting enough good fats. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s because the body uses the fat you eat to build cell walls. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
You have more than 10 trillion cells in your body, and every single one of them needs high-quality fat.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The higher-quality the fat you eat, the better your brain will function. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I eat fat with every meal, and I’ve never felt better. The right fats can improve your mood, skin, hair, and nails, while protecting you against Type 2 diabetes, dementia, cancer, and much more.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Among my favorite sources of fat include:⁣⁣⁣⁣
Avocados⁣⁣⁣⁣
Nuts & seeds⁣⁣⁣⁣
Fatty fish that are rich in omega-3 fats⁣⁣⁣⁣
Extra virgin olive oil ⁣⁣⁣⁣
Grass-fed or sustainably raised animal products ⁣⁣⁣

That insulin in turn creates a domino effect. It drives all those excess calories into fat cells that produce messengers that increase hunger, slow metabolism, prevent fat burning, and spike inflammation. ⁣

In women too much insulin turns estrogen into testosterone. The result is something misleadingly called polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is not an ovarian problem; it is a dietary problem. The extra testosterone in women causes hair loss, facial hair, acne, and infertility. ⁣

In men the testosterone gets converted to estrogen, which is why men with big bellies often have man b***s, low testosterone, impotence, and loss of hair on their bodies. In other words, they become more like women. ⁣

The same high sugar and starch diet also spikes the hormone cortisol. When you eat a sugar laden diet, your body literally perceives it as a stress, just like when a tiger chases you. Adrenaline and cortisol increase, worsening insulin resistance and increasing cravings for sugar and starch. ⁣

The cure: A whole foods, good fat, plant rich, fiber rich, low glycemic, and phytonutrient rich diet. This is what I call the Pegan Diet. ⁣

Our hormones are highly influenced by what we eat. The biggest factor impacting your communication system is reversing insulin resistance. The good news is that reversing insulin resistance starts at home, with your next bite!⁣

In our society, magnesium deficiency is a huge problem. By conservative standards of measurement (blood, or serum, magnesium levels), 65 percent of people admitted to the intensive care unit — and about 15 percent of the general population — have a magnesium deficiency.⁣

But this seriously underestimates the problem, because a serum magnesium level is the LEAST sensitive way to detect a drop in your total body magnesium level. So rates of magnesium deficiency could be even higher!⁣

The reason we are so deficient is simple: Many of us eat a diet that contains practically no magnesium — a highly processed, refined diet that is based mostly on white flour, meat, and dairy (all of which have no magnesium).⁣

When was the last time you had a good dose of sea vegetables (seaweed), nuts, greens, and beans? If you are like most Americans, your nut consumption mostly comes from peanut butter, and mostly in chocolate peanut butter cups.⁣

Much of modern life conspires to help us lose what little magnesium we do get in our diet. Magnesium levels are decreased by excess alcohol, salt, coffee, phosphoric acid in colas, profuse sweating, prolonged or intense stress, chronic diarrhea, excessive menstruation, diuretics (water pills), antibiotics and other drugs, and some intestinal parasites. In fact, in one study in Kosovo, people under chronic war stress lost large amounts of magnesium in their urine.⁣

Stop Draining Your Body of Magnesium⁣:
Limit coffee, colas, salt, sugar, and alcohol⁣
Learn how to practice active relaxation⁣
Check with your doctor if your medication is causing magnesium loss (many high blood pressure drugs or diuretics cause loss of magnesium)⁣

In addition to all of this, make sure you are taking Magnesium supplements. The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good.

The simple truth is that alcohol is likely not “good” for anyone. All of the benefits of red wine, such as resveratrol, can be found in other foods and supplements.⁣

Women are even more impacted by the deleterious effects of alcohol than men. There are studies linking alcohol consumption to breast cancer. It depletes nutrients and harms your gut, your liver, and your brain. ⁣

I’ve been wearing an Oura ring, which tracks my sleep every night. If I drink alcohol, I notice that it takes me twice as long to fall asleep, my heart rate stays elevated into the night, and I don’t feel great the next day. ⁣

While it might make you feel more relaxed to have a glass of wine at night, I think you’d be sur- prised to see what alcohol does to your body while sleeping. Sleep is when we detoxify and repair; we don’t need to make it harder by adding alcohol, a toxin, to the mix.⁣

I treat alcohol like I treat sugar: An occasional glass is fine, but daily can be problematic. Stick to one serving three or four times a week at most.⁣

A serving is 1 ounce of hard liquor, 5 ounces of wine, or 10 ounces of beer. If you don’t feel great drinking alcohol, skip it altogether. ⁣

There is no shame in telling people that you don’t drink. If someone peer pressures you, be firm about saying no, and tell them that you’ve been feeling really good while not drinking. No one can argue with that. ⁣

Migraines are a big problem for many people. These severe, nearly disabling headaches can occur anywhere from once a year to three to four times a week. They can last from hours to days. They are often associated with an aura, light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, and severe throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. And migraines can be caused by many different factors. ⁣

This is where Functional Medicine comes in. Functional Medicine is medicine by cause; not by symptom. It helps us discover the underlying triggers of disease.⁣

In a past episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I sat down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to ending migraines. We also explored how to identify and eliminate what might be causing your migraines and shared specific patient migraine cases we have treated.⁣
