Human trafficking is a prevalent industry in the United States, but many people remain unaware of it. And a lack of education on this topic is putting everyone at risk. Florida ranks third in the number of human trafficking cases reported, based on calls made to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The latest available numbers indicate there were 767 trafficking cases in Florida alone during 2018, and it is very possible that due to lack of awareness and information on how to report, these numbers are way below the actual number of cases.
Florida House Bill 851 established, among other things, that licensees and certificate holders of some healthcare professions must complete a 1-hour continuing education course on human trafficking. The goal of House Bill 851 is to combat human trafficking in Florida.
