A long time ago I saw this statement written in a book I was reading. And it changed everything for me! This simple yet very powerful statement changed how I now view the letters and sounds so I wanted to share it with you all as well. It’s important that we do not start with teaching the letters but teaching the sounds and how they are represented in writing to develop the correct awareness that letters really do not make sounds, animals make sounds!- But letters represent the sounds in print, they bring the sounds to life so we can also visually perceive them. Letters are therefore sound symbols🤩

Did you know that speech is a fine motor movement that is audible? Remember, what happens in the body, happens in the mouth as well. If your child is struggling with fine motor skills, it is important to also look at their speech skills.

Were you aware of a recent research article by Crowe, K., & McLeod, S. (2020) providing data that 'r' in United States develops in most children by the age 5!

I am still seeing many professionals citing old or outdated data and our clients are not getting the help they need when they need it!

I encourage you to read the article because when we know better, we do better! Know better and advocate for your children and families.

Phonological awareness is such an important foundational skill for reading! Research has shown that strong phonemic awareness in K and 1st grade is more predictable of successful reading in 8th grade than child's IQ (Kilpatrick, 2016)!
Most children develop phonological awareness naturally without any direct teaching or intervention. However, if you see the signs we discuss in the post that the phonological awareness is not developing naturally, utilize the strategies included inside to help your child to develop these early. And always remember, if something about your child doesn't feel right, then it probably isn't right.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our amazing moms out there! I am sending you a lot of love and strength today as we continue to advocate for our children to ensure they receive the right support they need to thrive 💕It is never easy, and as our to-do lists grow, and as we spend our “mother’s wellness day” cleaning and taking care of our family, we must remember that we matter, and what we do for our children matters, even if we don’t see the results right away!
Thank you to my son Liam- you made me a mom and thanks to you I became stronger because you needed me to advocate for you. Thanks to you, I became an SLP because you needed someone competent to support your communication on a daily basis! Thanks to you I am now helping other families, making them stronger in their fight for their children’s rights. A big shout out to all the incredible moms out there advocating for their little ones! Your love, strength, and persistence help change the world!

After the fallout of the pandemic, I've recently encountered more individuals who've never received a proper OME. It's important to keep in mind how early identification and treatment can benefit so many of those struggling with their speech.
Remember, always do an oral mechanical exam and consider "What do I see and why do I see it?"

May is ! I wanted to pass on some important information on common developmental milestones for the little one’s speech. Because there is a HUGE amount of knowledge out there, it may be difficult to refine what is the best action to take for your child’s speech development. You really do know your child the best and you should trust your gut. If you feel something isn’t right, it isn't right! Have the confidence to trust yourself and start looking for help! Find someone you can trust. The SLPs I’ve met truly care for their patients and are a great resource for these types of issues. Lastly, just because your child did not qualify for services once before doesn’t mean they can’t be evaluated again, or that they won’t qualify to receive help this time!
You are your child’s biggest advocate! Speak up :)
