When Jessica offers to give you an orientation on the weight equipment, don’t turn that offer down! 😃
I witnessed something incredible this week.
While I was at work, I happened to look down at the weight equipment and it was all…women! This might not seem like such a big deal to you all but I work in a 50+ Wellness Center, which makes this even more incredible.
You see, it really wasn’t that long ago that the weight training section was DOMINATED by men. It was the way of life. Women were meant to be on the cardio equipment and men were meant to be in the weight room.
16 years ago, I introduced free weights into my routine and if I told you I was intimidated, that doesn’t even shine a light on it. So, I picked up on my fellow gym goers routine. I watched from my elliptical and I would note what time the men would leave the weight room so it would be empty. As soon as they would leave, I’d run in there and try the weight lifting exercises I discovered in my magazine 🤣 I didn’t know what the heck I was doing, but I tried my best to copy the movement I saw.
As time went on, I became more and more confident and I joined those men at the same time. Because if I’m being honest, I hated cardio! Still do! What I never expected was for them to be supportive and tell me how awesome it was to see a female in the weight room. They even invited me to join their workouts and I’ve never pushed myself so hard!
Years went by and my love for weights continued to grow. What also grew was the amount of women in the weight room over the years. It’s truly incredible! The confidence that weight training gives you cannot be replaced by anything else. My goal is to have EVERYONE lift weights in some capacity. When I say this, I’m not telling you that you need to squat or deadlift hundreds of pounds to reap the benefits. It actually takes much less than that.
I could go all day if you ask me the benefits of strength training….
