Probably not as much as you think! The rule of thumb is 1-1.5 ounces per hour you are away from baby. So if you will be apart for 10 hours you need 10-15 ounces. A few extra ounces on top of this doesn't hurt and can be used in case of a spill. Whatever you pump on the first day can be used on the second day. If your work situation is a bit more complicated, schedule an appointment to make an individual plan! https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/pumping/milkcalc/

Lactation = a celebration of LIFE. We should all normalize breastfeeding/chestfeeding and pumping in public.

Part of improving lactation rates across all cultures and colors is to remove the stigma and shame that lactating families have to carry for doing what is necessary to feed their babies.

Let's celebrate proud breastfeeding/chestfeeding in August and every day.

You may have heard of the "golden hour" which is the hour or so after birth when babies should be skin-to-skin with mom so they can orient themselves to the breast and breastfeed for the first time (which can take up to an hour or longer!) We know this is not always possible if there were medical reasons why it was delayed or mom and baby are separated. This is why it's important that birthing parents and partners understand how to hand express. In order for milk to be released, parents need to feel relaxed and comfortable and patience is key. Massage, warm compresses, and reverse pressure softening can help get milk flowing in addition to skin-to-skin time with baby.

August is a great time to talk about the importance of breastfeeding since it's National Breastfeeding Month. I love this year's theme because there truly are so many partners in making sure a family breastfeeds successfully. From doctors to family members, politicians, to business owners, friends, partners, and other healthcare workers it takes everyone playing a role to help. If we all want to see more babies breastfeeding, it will take everyone's help!

Whether you’re currently nursing your little one in the middle of the night, have never breastfed, or are a spouse of someone pumping at work, there is something we can all do to step up for breastfeeding and make it possible and easier for all babies to get breast milk!

When a baby under 6 months old is only getting breast milk or formula, they are getting their nutrition and hydration at the same time. If it's hot, they make need to drink more often to help them stay hydrated. This doesn't mean you don't have enough milk!

Skin-to-skin holding, or Kangaroo Care (KC), is an important part of breastfeeding in the early days. Being placed on the mother's chest immediately after birth during the golden hour helps make breastfeeding easier once the baby is ready. A Mother's chest regulates to the perfect temperature for baby and baby feels calm and sleeps well in this position. Partners can hold baby skin-to-skin as well and is a great way to bond. It is also an amazing tool used with pre-term babies in the NICU that reduces mortality.
