Dear citizens of the world,

On this Earth Day, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the state of our global health, public health, planetary health, and the importance of the One Health approach. As we face unprecedented challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, emerging infectious diseases, and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that we recognize the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

In order to implement degrowth principles we must completely abandon growth at any cost hyper-capitalism, build steady-state economies, reduce overall consumption and production levels to achieve ecological sustainability. To achieve our shared goals of a healthier and more sustainable future, we must work together as a global community. Governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals all have a role to play in promoting sustainable development, mitigating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening public and planetary health.

As we celebrate Earth Day, I urge everyone to take action in their own lives to protect the health of our planet and all its inhabitants. Whether it is reducing your carbon footprint, supporting sustainable and ethical practices, advocating for policies that promote public health, or being vigilant against emerging health threats, we can all make a difference.

Let us pledge to work together towards a healthier and more sustainable future for ourselves, our communities, and Mother Gaia.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan Paul 🌍🌳

Happy National Public Health Week❗️❗️❗️

Degrowth and public health: An infectious disease epidemiologist’s musing ⬇️

Though degrowth and public health approaches differ, both share common values. The former proposes a path for transformation intended to halt the destruction of life-supporting systems by infinite economic growth. The latter aims to maximize health and wellbeing while reducing health inequities, using strategies ranging from health protection to health promotion.

In various jurisdictions, public health is legally mandated to act when population health is threatened. Some jurisdictions have also adopted a “Health in all Policies” approach.

Though public health has leadership for climate change and health adaptation planning, decisions and efforts on mitigation strategies are often left to the economic and environment sectors; several tools such as health impact assessments, healthy public policy development, and socio-economic determinants of health frameworks, are often ignored.

We must utilize a critical public health lens, theoretical analysis and empirical evidence to discuss barriers and facilitators to achieving synergy between public health and a degrowth perspective.

Public health has an ethical and legal duty to lead debates around sustainable living, and to unequivocally use its leverage to support degrowth ideas.

As long as public health networks are embedded in corporate-welfare bodies, it may be difficult to fully support social transformation towards degrowth to the extent required from one of the biggest challenges of our time.

Degrowth means embracing sufficiency for all, rather than excess for a few, and culturally, it means imagining a good life beyond consumerism.

This can be hard for people conditioned to living in a wealthy society.

For a degrowth movement to emerge, we need new myths, new stories, new hopes and dreams, and new conceptions of prosperity.

Only then can a new and equitable system emerge.

The four core components of C.H.A.S.E.:

👉Public Health Investment
Investing in public health initiatives that ensure access to care, social services, and health educational opportunities.

👉Public-Private Partnerships
Utilizing public and private funds to create local job opportunities and help maintain a healthy economy.

Cryptococcal meningitis is a leading cause of death in people living with , especially in resource-limited settings. Annually, there are an estimated 112,000 cryptococcal-related deaths, representing 19 percent of all AIDS-related deaths.

Despite data confirming the survival benefit of screening and preemptive treatment, only 14 African nations have adopted a national cryptococcal meningitis screening program.

A key barrier to countries implementing a screening program is the challenge of access to forecasting and cost-effectiveness data.

Did you know December is International Sharps Injury Prevention Awareness Month?

Studies have shown that needlestick injuries are often associated with:

* Not using safety-engineered sharps or using them incorrectly

* Recapping needles

* Transferring a body fluid between containers

* Failing to dispose of used needles properly in puncture-resistant sharps containers

Prevent needlestick injuries
Needlestick injuries can be avoided by eliminating the unnecessary use of needles, using devices with safety features, and promoting education and safe work practices for handling needles and related systems.

As a healthcare professional, you can protect yourself from a needlestick injury by:

* Avoiding the use of needles where safe and effective alternatives are available

* Helping your employer select and evaluate devices with safety features that reduce the risk of needlestick injury

* Using devices with safety features provided by your employer
* Avoiding recapping needles

* Planning for safe handling and disposal of needles before using them

* Promptly disposing of used needles in conveniently placed and appropriate sharps disposal containers

* Reporting all needlestick and sharps-related injuries promptly to ensure that you receive appropriate follow-up care

* Telling your employer about any needlestick hazards you observe and promptly reporting any needlesticks and near-misses

* Participating in training related to infection prevention

* Getting a hepatitis B vaccination

What to do if you experience a needlestick injury

If you experienced a needlestick injury or were exposed to the blood or other body fluid of a patient during the course of your work, immediately follow these steps:

* Wash needlesticks and cuts with soap and water

* Flush splashes to the nose, mouth, or skin with water

* Irrigate eyes with clean water, saline, or sterile irrigants

* Report the incident to your supervisor

* Immediately seek medical treatment
