Last night, Dr. Riseberg joined Dr. Christine Crawford and Dr. Lindsa McIntyre, and community leaders at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston Town Hall on food insecurity.
Over 1 in 3 Massachusetts residents are food insecure. In 2024, 32% of households with children were food insecure, the majority of whom were Black and Hispanic. For BCP patients, that number is approximately 40%. Food insecurity doesn't exist in isolation. When families are choosing between rent and groceries, children can't focus in school. When basic needs aren't met, kids' futures are at risk.
At BCP, we screen for food insecurity at every well-visit and we act. We distribute groceries at each appointment, connect parents to SNAP, and hold cooking classes for our families. But healthcare alone can't solve this.
Real change requires all of us working together: schools, health centers, community organizations, and policymakers.
What if we treated food security with the urgency it deserves – as essential to children's health, education, and futures?
Thank you to Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and Berkshire Partners Blue Hill Club for this critical conversation. 💙
